A-Rod: A-Liar

12:01 PM  February 19, 2009

So Alex Rodriguez has finally come clean about using performance enhancing drugs. Or has he? A-Rod, after all, is...a liar. It's not something I say lightly. Calling another man a liar is the kind of thing that might result in fisticuffs--especially if the guy you're accusing of being a liar is hyped up on steroids or who knows what? But as A-Liar said himself, he made his own bed...

It turns out Rodriguez lied repeatedly over the years in denying he ever used performance enhancing drugs. It wasn't until Sports Illustrated had the goods on him that he confessed to ESPN's Peter Gammons that he'd been a doper. But even then, he didn't tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

On Tuesday, he had another version of his story when he appeared at a news conference (at which no follow-up questions were permitted). In this version, his "cousin" (now identified by ESPN and other news organizations as Yuri Sucart of Miami, Florida) procured and injected him with a performance enhancing drug he called "boli." What is it? Doping experts aren't sure because they've never heard of it. According to Rodriguez: "I didn't think they were steroids." Really? Then why did you do it in secrecy? Why did you lie about it repeatedly? When pressed on it by a reporter, A-Liar admitted: "I knew we weren't taking Tic Tacs."

How believable is this version of A-Rod's story? Not very, according to someone who knows him. Suzyn Waldman is a Yankees radio broadcaster. As Waldman put it: "Do I believe that Alex Rodriguez, who won't have a Snickers bar or a cookie, let his cousin inject him with something that he didn't know what it was? I find that really hard to believe," she told New York's WCBS radio.

Why does this matter? For one, it's a matter of an uneven playing field that other baseball players have apparently been playing on. The guys who did it right are tainted by the guys like Rodriguez who did it wrong. They're the guys who've been lucky enough to play baseball for a living but who know they'll never make it into the Hall of Fame--guys like 14-year veteran Mike Sweeney, who told the AP: "Fans speculate that all players are doing it. It's unfair to the guys like myself who never did squat--never took a 'greenie,' never cheated, never took growth hormone, steroids, none of that."

A-Liar's behavior also sends the wrong message to kids. Here's a guy who has nine years left on a 10-year, $275 million contract. If Major League Baseball doesn't come down hard on Rodriguez, the message to kids is: Do dope and whatever else you have to do to make the big money. Don't worry about being caught because they'll just slap your wrist. You'll probably even end up in the Hall of Fame.

An Associated Press-GfK poll on that question, by the way, came out today. It showed 52-percent of baseball fans said Rodriguez shouldn't be allowed into the Hall. Only 52-percent? I wish they'd asked me and other dads and moms whose sons and daughters play the game.

What about A-Liar's records? With 553 home runs, there's a pretty good chance the doper will eventually become the home run king when he surpasses the 762 homers hit by another alleged doper, Barry Bonds. In my view, MLB should remove any records achieved by any known doper. But many fans just don't take the records seriously any more. Sixty-two percent of those surveyed said the allegations of steroid use in baseball have caused them to take that view.

So what's next? MLB's investigators are expected to try to talk to Rodriguez about his confessions and about whether his "cousin" ever supplied drugs to other players. For his part, Rodriguez told his teammates he's looking forward to "putting this all behind us and having an amazing season." I'm sure he is. A-Liar claims he'll do something in the future to tell kids that using steroids is wrong. Maybe he will. Expect a non-profit organization to be formed in his name. Expect a few public appearances and media appearances designed to make Rodriguez look like he's keeping kids off the dirty path he chose.

It's all just too predictable. You profit from cheating, you lie to the public about it, you confess, you claim you'll make up for it. We all move on and left behind is the great American pastime sullied again by another spoiled athlete who doesn't think the rules apply to him.

My hope is that this is the time baseball officials decide to do something that actually punishes this player and sends the message that the game is bigger than any one player. Even better--this is the time the athlete himself has some shame and voluntarily gives up his records and his salary from the years when he was cheating.

What are your thoughts? Am I being too harsh? Do you believe A-Rod's story? Should he be voted into the Hall of Fame someday? Should his records be allowed to stand?

So heres an idea.... how about if the contracts have a paragraph in them that tells the 'athlete' that if there is ever ANY use of drugs that surfaces during or up to 15 years after the contract has expired, that the liar is then responsible to repay the moneys collected and the rest of the gig is UP.

Do not buy any of their hats with his name on it....cerial boxes, keychains, frisbies, beach towels NOTHING. If you stop buying, the suits on top wont have anything to pay them with.

Why don't they just publish a list of allowed performance enhancement drugs?

Hell why not provide them and make more cash !!

as Ms. Lauper once said..... " Money changes everything .... " maybe if he was kicked to the curb , because he is way overdue for a Reality check....

lamesabassman...... check, please.....

Please, Please for the love of the Lord. Tell those two Angel's radio host's to retire. Niether one of them has ever hit a fast ball, I hate it when non's comment on sports. By the way are they married or are they just dating?

There are "rules" in place for society to keep us from complete anarchy. 'Rules' are meant to be followed and some (yes), broken..if they were ill conceived. THIS rule should NOT have been broken. Not when there are legitimate ballplayers out there following the rules and playing the game on their own merits. I am so sick of a society that is now "rewarding" people for being crooks (look at the computer Hackers of the world who when caught, get HIRED by big corporations etc), the alcoholics and drug addicts (who get their own reality TV shows and become instant celebrities to our young!). Then we have the gull to sit here and complain about how the world is going to hell in a hand-basket yet we DO NOTHING to reverse what is taking place! Throw A-Rod to the curb.

Mike - you are so right! And to even follow up, Barkley is taking his medicine like a man- he plead guilty and serving the 5 days for his first DUI offense! He didn't try to cop a "Not Guilty" plea, He will serve 5 days from March 21-25! Will we ever see anyone come clean in baseball before they get caught? Don't hold your breath!!

My biggest issue with"A-Fraud" is how truly NOT sorry he is. My best friend spent his entire career in the Minors. He was a very good position player but not great. He maybe lacked a couple percentage points on his average or was just a step too slow. He never made it to the majors but played every game like he was in the show.

He played with all the big MLB stars. He was even teamates with the first poster boy of the steriod scandal, Barry Bonds. My friend had every opportunity to do what all these players are now sorry for doing or didn't realize they were doing. He chose not to cheat, for if he did, it might have been his name on Diamond Vision, signing a $250 million dollar contract, or having all those little ballers crushing eachother for his autograph.

No, my friend chose not to cheat. He chose to play the game right and was rewareded by spending his career in the minors. My friend chose to keep his integrity.

A-Rod and those others can say sorry all they want, their integrity is something they will never get back. Do they even care?

As far as I'm concerned they will always be an asterik***.

Can you imagine being Pete Rose who only bet on games!!!!!!!

Frank - great blog!

My thoughts on A-rod?

What I find the most sad is anyone giving him credit for him coming clean. He only (sort of) admitted after he got caught. When these highly paid athletes try to claim ignorance as to what their personal trainers are providing them, and then expect us the public to believe them? Not a chance, by then all respect is lost.

Once a liar, always a liar. But, actions speak louder than words...

However, as for mistakes we all make them and stand-up people own up to them. Charles Barkley "man-ed up" the other night. Still doesn't make him a role model, but he did show his true character by apologizing (for his DUI) on national t.v. good for him and I wish him well.

Unfortunately in baseball, there will never be a fair way to distinguish some records from others. As long as athletes are trying to win, there will be someone trying to get an edge. Getting that edge may mean using a banned substance while pitching, using a corked bat, or even major league baseball may use baseballs that will travel farther to allow hitters to get more homers. None of these are fair to previous eras. Therefore, if a record is earned no matter how tarnished it was when obtained it should remain. Baseball just loses credibility and to the true fan those long treasured stats just become a farce and meaningless.

AMEN and well said YOUNG FRANK; It is because of A-pod, A-bonds and many others that I quit going to or watching baseball games and the playoffs and the World Series. I have been a Dodger fan stating back when they were still in NY, (as a boy growing up in Van Nuys) I hate all the NEW PHONY RECORDS and the Commish so now I stick to Football. Go Chargers. I agree with Mark about Pete Rose, banded for life for betting. MLB is telling the kids of the world it is OK TO CHEAT-LIE AND TAKE DRUGS, but if you gamble you are the lowest form of life. Love the Morning Show and very happy I can still watch after moving to beautiful San Diego.
P.S. late breaking news; NYY new mascot to be MY COUSIN VINNIE

Frank,
I am so tired of pro players getting away with the use of performance enhancing drugs with no severe consiquences. it's like they get a slap on the back of their hands and they continue to play and make the big money. Those that were caught in the olympics were stirpped of their medals and would lose any possible endorsements. I feel that pro players are over paid anyway. No one is worth millions to watch them run around and plays games. You no who suffers for the overpayed players? The fans do because ticket prices are way too high. And the the food is too expensive to feed one family. Just to pay millions to players to get on the field and play a game. They played for free in high school and collage. But now they want millions to play while they are using performance enhancing drugs. They should be stripped of their pay, suspended for a good length of time. And not be eligible for the hall of fame. These players are very stupid to think we don't know what they are doing. I don't go to pro games any more because of those players who have ruined for the honest player. They are over payed and I think the owners are very stupid to pay this kind of money to a player to play a game. Some of these players have become overpayed babies to play the game now. It's just not true sports any more. It's big money and drugs at the expenese of the fans.

I am a father but I get so sick of you news media people who believe you are perfect and everyone else who is popular that makes a mistake is so wrong and how dare them influence your children in such a negative way. What about wilt Chamberlain saying he slept with what I believe he said over 10,000 women but that is ok I guess. You people just hop on whatever is making news and hen try to justify how great you are. There are people that we are around every day that our doing things that are illegal and influencing our children and no one seems to want to talk about that. Stop trying to act smart about a situation you know next to nothing about.

Donald - For one thing - Baseball is nore of a stats driven and has held certain records more sacred than football has. Football is more about results, i.e. (wins, championships, ect.) The face of the game in the NFL is the QB - Manning, Brady, Montana, ect... Known for leadership, cool and smarts under pressure, not steroids.
Baseball's face of the game - Power hitter or power pitcher - The biggest names have been hit as linked with steroids (Bonds, McGwire, A-Rod, Clemens, Sosa, ect.) That is why baseball takes a bigger hit than football. Plus the NFL did put a drug test in place in the 80's, so they were much more proactive than MLB in testing their players.

Why is it that baseball fans go crazy about steroid use, yet when SD Charger Shawn Merriman tested positive no one said he should not go into the Hall of Fame. N.O. Saints Deuce McAllister tested positive. Made news, then people moved on. Did they reduce the tackles Shawn made that year or take yards away from Deuce? No. Merriman’s peers still voted him into the ProBowl. Even after missing games due to suspension. Sounds like they did not care. Brett Farve was a drug addict during many a seasons, until he kicked the habit. Do we throw out those records during those seasons? But baseball fans go crazy about this. WHY?

Do fans really care? No!!! They may complain but attendance at all major sports baseball, football and basketball is steady or increasing, even as prices go thru the roof. So as long as their team wins no one is complaining.

It’s too bad that players feel they have to resort to using drugs to do what they do but with the amount of money that these players can make, their only thought is to get paid as much as they can before they get hurt and get tossed to the side. This is the era of drug use and it will be there like it or not for a long time. None of the games will be completely clean. And just wait until runs are not produced and games are boring, the owners and Unions will look away with a blind eye again. Its all about the money. Then start stripping everyone that ever took something illegal or cheated. Remove them from the HOF. So baseball fans get off your high horse and realize that this is what the game has come too. Sad but true. Time to move on.

First and for most ALEX admitted to what he did he apologized to the kids, the fans, the organizations he gave somewhat of a detailed info on how he did it. As for him being a liar sure he lied. Most of all he lied to himself. Don't be offended Frank if you think he personally lied to you. I think we all lied about something in our lifetimes to get an edge on our carriers that you did not share with the whole world. One more thing A-rod is not only known for hitting the long ball he's a great player I'm not condoning what he did but he still had to play the game. Steroids don't give a person the ability to hit off an average MLB pitcher or the best for that matter it does not give the ability to catch, throw, make diving plays or to be a great player it will enhance your power. Power does not make you "turn two” make the out at first, hit a nice line drive in a key inning. Let A-rod get back to baseball lets all enjoy the great sport and stop judging other people before we look at ourselves. We all know there are no short cuts to success. lets teach that to our kids and let them learn from Alex's mistake. Other than judge him and call him a liar after the FACT "what is that teaching your kids''

Frank,
Who's the biggest liar in this mess? The owners? MLB players association? Trainers? The commisioner? Everyone points fingers, everyone is dirty from this mess. Players who didn't take anything, their dirty too! They kept their mouths shut, they may have tried to do everything legal, but if you look at the overall picture performance got money, who paid the money? Owners and Agents all knew what was expected for the price, and turned a blind eye to how it was achieved. MLB became a second rate league, they wanted it to be americas sport of choice again, they wanted the revenue.
I can remember looking at the players over the years, I can remember football having to deal with droids, track and field, cyclists, even basketball. Their all dirty from it. In america dirty is news, clean is oh well, every morning I watch you report on events, it's not the good guys being interviewed it's all the bad folks getting the props. The american sports fan is the biggest loser, we pay way to much to watch big kids play a game. I think the Romans did this too! My solution, Olympic drug testing for all professional sports in the United States period. Weekly tests for everyone once a week during the season. You get caught, your gone, no salary, no fan fare, you just are kicked out of the game. MLB then fines the owners for not keeping their players drug free. That money goes to educational programs to educate everyone about drugs and the moral implacations of cheating.

Get over it. It happened so long ago. Move on!!!!!!!! They are all guilty of something.

Frank
First thank you for the great job you do on the morning news,
At the risk of allot of folks criticisms.
In the case of “A-liar” you are 100% correct.
I think America is the only country in the world where someone can do something illegal, immoral, dishonest, or shameful, and wind up as million heirs.
What is this world coming to?
Also in this category in my opinion would be an incident in the news of late that involves the number 14, does this ring any bells?

I'M SO HAPPY THAT YOU HAVE PERSONEL KNOWLEDGE THAT A-ROD TOOK STERIODS AND YOU CAN BE JUDGE AND JURY AND CALL HIM A LIAR. IT'S REAL EASY FOR YOU TO TAKE THIS STAND AND CONTINUALLY KNOCK THE YANKEES AND EVERYTHING THEY DO AND NOT JUST THE A-ROD SITUATION. I GUESS IT'S JEALOUSY SINCE LA HAS ONE MINOR LEAGUE TEAM THE DODGERS AND ONE FAIRLY GOOD TEAM THE ANGELS.

As someone who has worked extensively with athletes for most of his professional life, two things need to be shared here so that people understand the whole situation.
1) Any athlete that states he doesn't know what he is putting into his/her body is already a liar. Athletes know what every little thing is that they eat, drink, etc., etc. from the time they were old enough to remember to this day.
2) If an athlete tests positive for elevated testosterone levels, then they did more than take a single steroid.
3) If there is a "silver bullet" that would give an athlete an advantage, right, wrong, or indifferent, they will try the "silver bullet". And we as the public should not be awed, or mad that they did use this "silver bullet".

I have one friend that said it best, " Henry Aaron is still the True career Home Run king in his mind at 755 and Roger Maris still hold the single season record at 61! Mcgwire, Sosa, Bonds, A-Roid, Canseco, ect.. their records should all have the infamous "tainted asterisk" of shame and be noted that these records were enhanced by use of Performance enhancing drugs.
Baseball hid their heads in the sand a long time on this including the current Commish-Bud Selig! He and the players union heads and the players themselves are to blame for this debacle!
For once, can't one of these guys actually do a legitimate apology without the phony excuses, also? Suck it up like a man! Just say, " Yes, I took them at a time when they were not illegal in baseball because I wanted to get a competitive edge and thought I needed a shortcut to be great! I regret it now, it was stupid but I did take them and I know what I was putting into my body!
I would actually respect someone more by manning up and saying the above instead of some PR statement read apology!

Frank,
I believe his name is "A-ROID" - short for Alex ROIDriguez!!!!

I completely agree with you on this one Frank! Not only not allowed in the Hall of Fame, but the strickest and most severe penalties should be placed on A-ROID!
I think he should lose his multi millions that he's still looking to rake in.

I'm sorry, I think more parents should be OUTRAGED about this. Abso-friggin-lutely!

This is where the fans need to really speak up and let the MLB know that we are tired of this.
They're paying these players multi millions to inject steroids and then LIE about it, and then have to raise the price of tickets to the games. How about these Lying Thugs in Baseball pay back the fans and let us into the games for free for an entire season!
