Mark Kriski's First Blog
12:01 AM February 26, 2008
Lets think, lets share, lets have some fun but most of all lets not be afraid.
Recently, all of the television news anchors were asked to submit weekly BLOGS on the KTLA web site. The World Wide Web. The new frontier of unrestricted, unregulated expression. No rules. No laws. Sounds exciting? Yes!!! But let’s think about this for a moment. To date, my Web presence has been limited to my "MySpace" page (Mark Kriski). This BLOG is my first foray into the professional realm of Cyberspace. A daunting challenge - with a whole new set of responsibilities. It has been a desire of mine for quite some time to have the ability to express my views, thoughts and ideas beyond the boundaries of my primary job description. The Internet. The new wild west; untamed and still in its infancy. Moreover, unregulated. I was very excited about having this platform - an electronic interface with the entire world. However, being a long standing and conscientious employee of KTLA, I asked our News Director, our Morning News Producer and our Human Resources Coordinator what the official rules are as to what we can and cannot openly discuss. I queried them about corporate policy regarding the tone, angle and to what extent we may push the envelope on sensitive subject matter. What are the ground rules? On a scale of one to ten; what is KTLA’s tolerance for controversy? The answer is: there is no official policy. Excellent! Well, maybe not. Don Imus is still unemployed. After stating that there is no policy and procedure guideline for Web dialogue, each of the management reps noted above gave me an impromptu synopsis of their personal "take" on how the BLOGS should operate. Three sets of opinions. Three very different views. No continuity of purpose. Utter conflict. I am now more confused than ever. In my first BLOG I am asking a few questions, please help me out. Are you asked or required in your work place to perform duties that have no rules? Heaven help you though if management feels you’re out of line. Cruel and unusual punishment if they have not provided you with a simple line to follow. If you are in management would you put your employees in this position?
As we move forward. Lets think, lets share, lets have some fun but most of all lets not be afraid.

Hey Mark, great job on the blog. As a sr. partner at a boutique PR Firm (dRV Public Relations, INC), we are discussing these social platforms with our clients. Everyone is a bit nervous. But I must say being able to talk about issues in a different way and reach new audiences is amazing. I also have a my space account (Lourdes). By the way, thanks for the sunshine report, it was time we got some vitamin D. Have a great week.

Good Morning ... I was online when I heard you mentioning Mark's first blog... and then you suggested to explore what he had written. I decided to see what he had to say and saw a different side of him. At times listening to your news I find him frustrating. He has to do a flip on news items and at times comes off simple. In the writing of this blog we see a different side. We see someone apprehensive and defensive. He is bothered that there is no policy from his company and even asks us how do you proceed in an environment where you work when they require you to do something but yet offer no protection? I found his writing to be far more refreshing than I expected. He was not a once beach boy sun tan man holding onto his youth and being goofy in the process. He was reflective and wanting people to respond. Thank you all. I enjoy watching your news and the culture of your group antics. Mark - trust your self. You have a good mind (I can not believe I now believe that.) You might want to show a little more of this side of yourself instead of sometimes arguing for the flip of things that just make you sound flip.
Best to all of you...

do unto others as you would have them do unto you......same guidelines in life, apply to the web. each day we face situations where we have to "filter" our thoughts, in fear of a law suit. the web should be no different.

Since the blog is on the company website, and its asked of you to participate, I think they should give you some rules. When an anchor does a commentary, are there rules for that?Maybe the management team should use those rules as a starting point since it seems that blogging is the new version on a commentary.

Contrary to what some of you are saying, I can picture Mark using the words he used on his blog! Mark-express yourself however you want to...that's what we want to see!

WOW! Being a fellow Canadian myself I want to say hello to Mark and good job with your first BLOG. But I was wondering how long it took your wife to write it for you, HAHA just kidding. Hope you have a great day and good luck with your second BLOG!!!!

there is NO WAY Mark wrote this!!! Which intern did he pay?? His use of "big words" and grammar are WAY too impressive for me to believe Mark sat down and wrote this himself...
LOL...
(personally I think he gave Eric Spillman $10 to write this for him..) =0)

I say put Mark, Michaela, and Ryan Seacrest in the ring and see who comes out standing. I would bet Mark would question the purpose of the fight, Michaela would tell him he was wrong for questioning authority, and Ryan Seacrest would try and trade hair secrets with Mark - all while doing his morning radio show.

Mark,
Be afraid! Be very afraid! People can't handle the truth. "Did I say that out loud".
Good Luck!

How creepy is it that you folks are so worried about being exactly who you are?

Mark, good blog. I would really CYA since you are doing this at your place of employment. Companies need to set standards and not leave employees in the dark as most often do. Then they fire you for comments they find offensive, but yet set no rules. I really enjoy the KTLA morning news. I have watched since 1991. I enjoy everyone on the show. Keep up the good work.

Management directives…hmmmm. Entering the work force in the early 1970’s and having a husband who also entered the workforce during the same time frame, we have experienced many different management styles. We have experienced increasing ineptitude of management. This could be due to the companies who hire management with planned dismissal, or companies who believe that bringing in more management while thinning the workforce and overworking the remaining workers (and, of course, not giving raises because there is no money for that) is “good business”, or companies who manage from a different country, or possibly, companies who promote for social reasons rather than qualifications for the job. What does this have to do with your blog, you may ask? Quite possibly, nothing…I may just want to slam today’s management (or lack of thereof).
It is your going to management for directives that spurred this on. Trying to get a definitive decision from management has many barriers. You have to deal with individuals who have little knowledge of today’s technological world (let alone any interest in it). Then, obviously, management must be “politically correct” (what a great term for just taking the wimpy way out). There is also fear of not wanting to make a decision because that decision may prove to be wrong (how would that look to one’s superiors…sigh…I call it “pink slip phobia”). However, I applaud you for trying to get a clarification.
True, I do not know your management. Yet, they can not be much removed from today’s business management, budget management, government management, etc. Yes or no? Is it within your manager’s “policy” to be able to answer this?

Mark, after reading your blog, it is definitely confirmed that the writers' strike is over! Now, on how you conduct yourself going forward, it would all depend on who paid for them, you or KTLA. :)
Love you guys!

I think your hair is uglier than the women in Seattle, that you commented on some time ago. I wonder, who was your ghost writer?

Hey Mark, enjoyed your blog...I say go for it, write from the heart and you can do no wrong. Now, a totally random question, is Sam Divorced? He never seems to mention his family anymore...just curious.

Wrong Mark: Don Imus is employed again on WABC Radio and telecast on RFD Channel 379 on Direct T.V. and I still watch him every a.m. Love you and the a.m. show where I turn to after IMUS. Wish Jessica had more on the show and less helicopter. She is soooooo funny and cool.

Mark, Mark, Mark! You started off mentioning your myspace page which depicts a picture of you taken 20 years ago when you wore make up. I just want you to do 3 things for me. Give the meaning of impromptu, foray, and conscientious. Also when Omorosa gets there can you ask her what (2) very large things did she buy with her reality money, lol.

Well done Mr. Kriski,
I always sensed there was something more than weather and the quips under that hair. It's nice to see you flex that brain of yours. It's too bad you will likely need to edit yourself since this is the site of your employer because I think if unfettered, you could realy spark new realms of thought.

The fact that we have to be afraid to write what we feel should say something about our society. We can say what we want as long as its sugar coated. Screw that I want my blogs raw and to the point. They should be real, heart felt, educated opinions. Dont worry Mark, if they fire you I will start a petition LOL
Posted by: Mida | February 26, 2008 at 08:35 AM
Mark, I agree with Charlene, I much prefer the other picture of you at THIS age, or closer. As for your blog, I think it's terrific. We need to see the REAL Mark Kriski, not the one who always has to feel he needs to be sarcastic. I also looked up the word queried, I saw query, queries, but no queried. Are you sure that was a word? Perhaps to query? Love, Joy

Mark ... I'm glad you guys are starting blogs. I have always seen you as a guy who has a lot to say and with clear opinions. I know you are bright and quick. Re limits .... just the law ... libel and slander are off limits. As a guideline, just imagine your Mother reading your blog. That is all you need to guide you. But don't hold back.
