Michaela's Blog: our old friend, change
6:15 AM March 31, 2008
Something that I have known for sometime, that has become so much more apparent to me recently in light of the Blogs, is that our viewers care fiercely for our station and our show. Recognizing that helps take the sting of some of the blows that have been flung my way.
I understand. The relationship between a viewer and their newscaster or news program is one based on trust and familiarity. I learned that the first time around at my first job way back when.
We work very hard to establish that trust. It takes time, like any relationship to develop and cement. (Ask Frank. He has worked very hard to become one of the family and let you get to know him. To great success, I might add) Unfortunately, change is one of few constants in life. And it has a habit of popping up when we least expect and welcome it. We've certainly had our share of it here at KTLA in the last while. From the sudden passing of our dear Hal, the departure of Carlos and the recent 9am change, it has been alot to foist upon you, our viewer.
Sadly, some of this change has been beyond our control. None of us were ready to lose two of our beloved newscasters. But some of the change has been made mindfully and purposefully. Trust me, I too have been puzzled by some of it. But just because I disagree with some of the new moves or adjustment, it certainly doesn't mean anyone is going to listen to me.
I can relate to the discomfort many of our viewers are feeling with regard to the changes they see on our station. Our new owner has given us the task of trying some new things out, forging new ground and experimenting with our programming. While some of it is bound to resonate, not all of it will. But we gotta try it. That won't sit well with some of you. Trust me, it doesn't always feel great on this end either. But we have got to give it a shot.
So for those of you, like me that are feeling fiercely protective of KTLA and really want it to continue to be that force in local television that it has been since the station first launched January 22, 1947; I hear you and I am right there with you.
Oh and one last thought, don't take my silence in regards to your criticism of the new 9am show as me not caring. In fact, it is quite the contrary.

Nice to hear from you, Michaela, but it would be even better to know that management is listening to the viewers. They really need to address the fact that many viewers are no longer watching the show between 9 and 10 am. Simply, it stinks, and was a bad decision on their part. They need to understand that.

Hey Michaela, you gals are the best! As are the guys! The outcome of the 'changes' will be realized... and hopefully, back to the 'old' way it will be. Hope that you can keep your viewers until that time. The world is going through too many changes, and we need a wee bit of local stability to live!
No matter what, I love you guys... how about an employee takeover? kidding... but worth thinking about. A real for the people tv station???
With great admiration of your blog,

From Michaela
"Our new owner has given us the task of trying some new things out, forging new ground and experimenting with our programming."
If forging new ground is to lose viewers, then they have done that in spades. I switch the channel and from reading the blogs I'm not alone.
It's the new owner's right to make changes. It's our right not to except them. What I would like to know is who came up the idea of the new format. Did it come direcly from the new owner (or his people) or was it the brain child of some moron at KTLA?
If people want to boycott something, then they should boycott KTLA . . . period.
The new owner doesn't care about loyal viewers. Take the hint people. Say bye bye to KTLA and switch to another station. I'm sure they will welcome you.

Michaela, I have yet to place a bet on the 9 A.M. show, as I have learned, as you say, give it time to grow! If it doesn't, then it will change again, maybe not back to what it was, but maybe even better than that. I have been a loyal M.N. viewer since near the beginning of the show in 1991 and have lived and groaned through many changes. It will take a lot more than a show hour that's suffering a few growing pains to put me off the best morning program ever! Keep up the smiles and laughter and good ol' Aunt Gayle and you'll be fine!
Love and hugs from Canada, eh!

Michaela, I can appreciate what you are trying to do here but it’s not going to work. You would have had a better chance at this had you apologized for your comments a couple of day after this disaster. If you can’t bring to mind what I’m speaking about, let me refresh your mind…you told us, your very faithful viewers in which you speak about, to “get over it”. I’\m sorry but that was wrong! Yes, change is part of life and I agree that not everyone likes it. BUT give me a BREAK! NO ONE likes it Michaela. I would like to take a poll, I’ll bet that you have lost at least 75% of your views for the 9a. Many are starting to leave the 7-9a. Instead of trying to act as if you are on our side, admit you were wrong…it will go a long way.
Oh and by the way, it’s one thing when Anchors move on. That is part of life and their career, no one can fault them for do that. But it is completely different when a news cast or show, (that has done extremely well) is changed beyond understanding and completely unbearable to watch and those in power don’t give a dam. TV is marketing and there has to be someone with GREAT clout on that stage getting Management to leave things are they are…Any one you know??

I certainly hope that Mark is using his time wisely by interviewing elsewhere. I hope Sam does the same. If we could get the 2 of them over at GDLA then I won't have to watch KTLA from 7 to 9 anymore.

Yada Yada Yada too little too late. Don't you get it people aren't watching anymore. You have lost the majority of your viewers (trying something new). You have more readers reading your blogs than watching your show.

I’m not sure what is going to happen to the 9a. At this point, I don’t watch and don’t care anymore. It has become pretty clear though, especially by this blog, that things are going to stay the way they are. I was told to get over it too and I have. Our family has been with KTLA for as long as I can remember. I have a feeling that if this continues in the morning KTLA will be going back to re-runs and there will be no more AM news, like back in the old days. I love Carlos and was devastated when he left, especially without any warning. I can appreciate why now.

Sam, I enjoyed watching your daughter (Perry)interview the stars. Every time I see her on camera doing your work I realize what a natural talent she truly is. She could take your job today you know. But I am certain she is smart enough not to get a job at KTLA. Thought, maybe she could do the 9:00 show by herself because she is a ball of entertainment and that show is a ball of something else.

Hi Michaela,
Nice to know someone hears the viewers. I just sent an email re: the 9 am format -I really don't like it! You and Cher are fabulous and professional. Jessica is cute, but seems a bit immature, I don't expect you to comment on that, just my personal observation. I think a show can be fun without being cheesy. Hang in there girl, we love you in the morning, but as much as I've tried to hang in, I'm tuning out at 9. I work from home and like the company when I'm here alone (as background), but now I'll have to go back to Regis and Kelly (ugh).
I hope the new owners GET IT soon, I'm not much of a TV watcher, but I'm loyal to what I like.
Love ya!

I am one of the original 1991 fans of the show. I felt like you all were family. However now, I don't watch any of your morning news hours at all anymore. The 7-9 news is uncomfortable to watch and I believe it's because of the incredibly awful 9 clock mess. I regret that I have been FORCED to switch to Good Day LA which makes me cringe less than your show. So, Michaela, I took your advice and GOT OVER IT and moved on. I will miss Sam, Eric and Mark, though.

I have to agree hole heartedly with LaToya! You do have many more people reading your blogs than watching the show. I too have tuned out even between the 7 and 9 hours. I stopped watching the 9 hour the first day March 17th. What a shame that someone there doesn't care what we the viewers think. I just hope that the powers that be don't wait until it's too late to get the viewers back. READ YOUR BLOG COMMENTS PEOPLE. WE DON'T LIKE THE NEW FORMAT. One would hope that whoever is the deciding factor there, does realize and soon it isn't working!

Let's see cheesy set, cheesy show segments, cheesy graphics, cheesy sound effects, cheesy topics, cheesy guest, just cheese everywhere. I am now CONSTIPATED and it is all of your fault KTLA.

In the words of Blaine & 'Toine (re: In Living Color).... Hated It, Hated It and STILL Hate IT. the 9 o clock show, Michaela's attitude, etc
Posted by: viewer no more | March 31, 2008 at 10:15 AM
I watch KTLA every weekday morning, sometimes between 5am-6am or 7-10. Yes, there has been change, but isn't that apart of life? And I think Michaela, Frank, Sam, Mark, and Eric have been dealing with it well. Over the years, KTLA has become a part of my household, I can't stand to watch news from New York or the unprofessionalism of Fox 11. Like every thing in life, this change that we are seeing will somehow figure itself out and our news anchors that we have come to love probably have little to know say in these changes, so stop blaming Michaela or anyone else for something that they can't and don't control.

The thing I LOVE about the KTLA news is the perfect match-up of personalities. The meld of male / female energy... the Ying and the Yang. So... the 9:00 hour... (not to mention the IKEA furniture) I think is lacking that balance. I absolutely adore you women... but i think the male energy makes the whole package more complete. I mean... I LOVE lobster and hot melted butter... but the lobster alone, without the butter... is just another chewy overpriced crustacean sitting on cheap patio furniture.

I sent a very lengthly e-mail to station management about the changes to the 9am hour. I have given it a chance everyday and find myself turning it off or changing the channel. I love you Michaela. I really like Cher and Jessica is a breath of fresh air, but this show isn't working for me at all. The set is so awful and distracting. It looks like an afterthought. Michaela you are gorgeous and shouldn't be forced to sit uncomfortably at a table far to short and small for you. I feel sorry for you as you are such a dedicated pro. My second main complaint about the new format is that it just doesn't seem to be as smart or hard hitting as the old format. I want my mind to be stimulated, not just watch a bunch of silly fluff. The fluff stuff is what your competitor does and it is exactly why I don't watch them. I do miss the boys, particularly Frank and Sam. I wouldn't miss Mark if he didn't come back. Sorry Mark.
On a side note. Someone needs to tell Jessica to be careful with all her hand movements. I think she makes too many, unintentional noises with them and touches her guests far too much.
Hang in there Michaela. You are fabulous and deserve better! PS. You need to know that a lot is two words, not one.

Bla, bla, bla Michaela. It's too little and way too late. Between the lame format idea and your "Let them eat cake" attitude you have lost this long time viewer.
You can put the blame on the new owner, but Sam Zell didn't own KTLA when YOU were put on the Rose Parade, and he didn't own the station when the idea came out to have YOU come out from behind the desk and lead the "Hot Topics" segment. So explain that?
I still believe you had a hand in the new format. And this blog is just your way of taking the light off of you.

Notice most of the nay sayers are nameless. Stand up and be proud of your thoughtless remarks. If you hate the show and obviously are distasteful of Mikehla, then absolutely should you not watch the show, but get the heck off the blog as well.
Get Over It indeed! Move on! Be Gone! Leave the rest of us alone.
Posted by: Adrienne | March 31, 2008 at 10:48 AM
I'm sorry Adrienne but I count 14 or 15 "nay sayers" as you put it who put OUR names on our comments and only 5 "nay sayers" who didn't. And what gives you the right to tell people how to post on a "public" blog? Geez if you like the morning show be PROUD and speak up about it. I notice you didn't say anything positive though that could be considered "on topic" to this blog!!! Michaela is a big girl, she can handle the "nameless nay sayers" if she feels she has to! Damn!
Posted by: Dan | March 31, 2008 at 10:59 AM
I have to say that I am also one of those that don't agree with the new format. It isn't that I don't agree with change, change is good in some respects. I just don't see what was wrong with the other format. I enjoyed being able to listen to how different guest personalities viewed different subjects. I also liked the interaction between the newscasters and the viewers. Coming from a male point of view, regardless of who is on screen, the new format isn't appealing to me. Unfortunately, I turn off my TV at 9a.m. since the format changed.
Posted by: Luis H. | March 31, 2008 at 11:02 AM
I am NOT "nameless", I do stand up and proud of what I have to say!!
BTW...I agree completely with Dan and Adrienna…in your words…”Get over it Indeed! Move on! Leave the rest of us alone”

Adrienne, I am glad that you are standing up for what you believe in. That is your God given right. Just as others who have purchsed their computers and pay for their wireless or cable access have the right to voice their opinions any way they see fit. I for one have not watched the show since the fourth day in but I do read the blogs to find out if the format has changed. I see it hasn't.
