Sam Rubin Fired: April Fools!
10:04 AM April 1, 2008
Today we played a big April Fools prank on everyone. Watch the clips below to see how it unfolded.
First, Sam walked off the show after supposedly getting a nasty memo from KTLA management:
Then, Mark was taken away by security:
Later, Sam showed up at KIIS-FM on Ryan Seacrest's show. He got a call there from a "Tribune executive" telling him he was fired:
Ryan Seacrest offered Sam a job on his show, and then the joke was revealed:

Oh my gosh! You guys totally got me! Having Sam quit on air, and then Mark escorted off the premises was so believable! I had to sit there for 2 hours to figure out if it was for real or not!! Kudos to you for fooling us viewers

I really fell for the joke, but now I am just upset. I really like Sam not Mark. I was devestated when I thought that I would not get to see Sam in the mornings.

Pretty weak...waste of a couple hours...are we going to have to see this every APril 1?

This was NOT funny...I'm sorry. I think the only reason this worked is because of the all the turmoil going on. YOU knew that if one of the guys left the viewers would riot. I as posted earlier today in the Messages, although I can appreciate a good April Fools, please don't mess with the boys!! They are all we have left.

Let's bring in Jessica to do the Entertainment and Weather broadcasting.

At first I was bothered by what was going on but i thought well good for Sam and Mark, they deserve better. After all Carlos got a better job and I am sure there is one out there for Sam and Mark. The management got rid of the 9:00 show and the 7-9 show is falling apart. I suggest you guys get out while the gettin' good. If Ryan was serious Sam then take the job!!! It's too bad that they didn't remove Michaela and it were true.

You guys are sooooooooooo bad!!!!
As I was composing my email of outrage (which I didn't Send), the guard came to usher Mark off the set. That's when I knew Sam's leaving was part of a very complex April Fool's joke. HAHAHA. You got me.
Loved the sequence with a clueless Ryan Seacrest. Can you keep your KTLA morning gig AND work with Ryan too? You'd be fun on the radio, Sam, and you'd be laughing all the way to the bank.
You guys are bad, but you ROCK!!

As with your new 9:00 format. This was LAME beyond words.
Keep digging that hole.

LOL! Well-done. Intricate, with some nice touches that made me uncertain if it was a joke or not.

Too bad I don't watch the show any more. This was pretty funny. But April Fool's staarted for KTLA on Monday, March 17, 2008.

Great job this morning keeping us guessing! Enjoy your morning show and have for years. I would really hate to see any of you leave. Nice to have the news and then a little bit of laughter along with it. Helps us deal with it. Seems that is what your show has been about for years. Keep up the good work.

Considering all the changes that are occurring at KTLA, this April Fool's joke was tasteless and not funny.

While watching the attached video clips I couldn't help but notice "Eduardo from Chicago" said he was on the 101 at the first part of the call and then said he was in Chicago...it was an OK stunt but was the joke supposed to be on us the viewers or Sam?
Posted by: cookiegirl | April 01, 2008 at 11:56 AM
Lame April Fool's skit that went on way too long. Bad acting all around, particularly Rubin but also "Eduardo," who couldn't decide if he was calling from the 101 freeway or from Chicago.
I want that idiot Rubin fired for real. It is horrible to watch that disgusting, self-serving flamer on a major market news program. I usually switch over to the Early Show or to channel 11's Dorothy Lucey over that unprofessional dork Rubin, but I saw this morning's stupidity on KTLA--hoping their weak joke might miraculously be true.
Jessica deserves to be his immediate and permanent replacement.

A good April Fool's joke is quick, funny, and can't bite you in the butt. Today set accomplished none of the above and quickly cascaded totally out of control!

Sorry gang. That was painful. I agree with Casey. A good joke is quick. I got my 11 year daughter today in one sentence. "The Principal called and we're meeting with her after school" Now that was a good joke. She freaked out for about two seconds and then got it immediately. KTLA's joke went on and on and on and on........

Right on Shelly!! I agree with you.. SAM, go with Ryan!!The NEW KTLA is grasping for attention.. Sorry, you still suck!

SAM TAKE THE JOB AT KIIS FM!!!! I NEVER LIKED YOU ANYWAY...... APRIL FOOLS
Posted by: Edward Steffen | April 01, 2008 at 01:53 PM
Wow. Some people here are just disgustingly mean! I love watching you, Sam. 13 years after and I'm still a fan. Keep up the good work, gang.

The way things are going at KTLA I hope the joke is really not on you...think about it! You may be getting Ryan's coffee sooner than you think.

I saw later on another TV station that Regis was preparing to fill in for Sam, as he's used to taking over when someone walks off a show.
Posted by: Anthony | April 01, 2008 at 03:13 PM
Barbara Beck, Michele Ruiz, Jennifer York, Carlos Amezcua, then you Sam? KTLA is never quite the same as the original crew! I hate all those added crew. They stink at news report reading! No talent whatsoever! Now, Motek is awesome! He's very animated when it comes to business reporting...all you gotta follow along are his eyebrows if you want to know what kind of mood he's in. Cher Calvin is boring. Michaela is boring. Eric is boring heck everyone there except for Motek is boring. I'm switching to Channel 11; now thats entertainment! Learn from Channel 11 KTLA MORNING NEWS! YOU SUCK BIG TIME! What waiting for me to say April Fool's! Heck no! Ok, Happy Sam Rubin he got me good you fool nearly gave me a heart attack this morning April Fool's Day!

Whether or not it is April 1 or not, a news program can not engage in intellectually dishonest pursuits with viewers. The entire basis and value of the "Morning News" program is honesty.
The KTLA conduct would be sharply criticized by guys like Gene Autry, Hal Fishman, and Stu Chambers.

Thank God you all can read many words per minute off of a teleprompter. That could have very well been the worst acting I've ever experienced. You have toppled the once great Over The Top where Sly Stallone must arm-wrestle in order to get custody of his son and Stone Cold with former linebacker Brain Bosworth as a loner cop. It's nice that the officer involved shooting that was being reported on other networks (which I was watching instead) was being ignored so you could "fool" everyone. This news station has become the bad accident that I can't not look at when I pass by to see the awful carnage that is on KTLA now. THANKS!!!
