One and a half blogs. Sam goes deep inside KTLA and 'Idol' too

9:52 PM  May 21, 2008

Television News is nothing if not reactionary; one station shows a car chase; the ratings are good, and soon every station in town is showing car chases. There is an ongoing debate in the halls here and elsewhere about the fate and future of TV news...and most especially the news that means the most to me, the KTLA Morning News.

Today my colleagues and I were in a lengthy and provocative meeting with one of our new chiefs and his suggestions as to what we should do to make the show more interesting, more vital; changes that will generate higher ratings and higher revenue. They don't call this "show friends," it is "show business"

Allow me to digress for a moment....I am writing this while watching the finale of 'American Idol' and forgive the expression but 'gag me with a spoon.' It must be good for Fox executives to know that they were able to get Paramount to almost certainly pay for the entire production with that giant promotion of "Love Guru." I have always been a huge Mike Myers fan, but now I am not too sure about that movie....and perhaps this is the pot calling the kettle black...but Jimmy Kimmel, honest to God is perhaps the least funny person alive; at least during his 'Idol' monologue. I will make a public bet with Ryan Seacrest and the producers of 'Idol' that I would get 100 more laughs than Jimmy, in fact anyone would. A few minutes later, the show has almost redeemed itself with the David Cook/ZZ Top and especially the Graham Nash/Brooke White duet. Now, with the 'bad singer' thing it is once again awful. The best highlight so far, David Cook doing the 'Risky Business' commercial.

Okay, back to TV news...and the ongoing debate; is it the content that matters or the way that content is presented to you. To be honest, I tend to think that if the content is solid; that the journalism is sound; the stories current and interesting; the competition with other stations is really about the presentation. Who does it...how it is done, etc.

In the last several months at KTLA we have made some massive mistakes, and as karma would have it, those who forced those mistakes upon you and us, have all been shown the door.

So now it is not just time to fix things, but make things a lot better. Hated that desk on the 9 o'clock show....well, do you see it now....there are other changes and I believe major, major improvements on the way. But in the course of trying to do better, we may do some things worse. So to that end, I am asking you, the same smart and wise Morning News viewers who knew that David Cook was going to win Idol, to help us here. When you see something you like, let us know. When something doesn't work, tell us too. That is part one, of what I want to obligate you to do.....wait until I get to part two.

When the show is ready, I will.

Just know, as I am sure you do. We love these jobs. We love this show. We appreciate this daily opportunity to communicate with you. And, yes, we are going to get better at it,

Some might say too little too late. Others will give it a chance. As for me I will wait and contiue to read the blogs before I turn back to the KTLA morning show.
I think there were a lot of hurt feelings from the very rude comments made to the viewers and it will take a lot of "making up" to get them back.
Good Luck to the new people at KTLA. They have a lot to prove and a whole lot to fix.

Several other sources have stated that Zell's other stations have become more tabloid-y, not less. We'll see what the proof is as time goes on.

So far I'm much happier with the 9:00 hour as Sam and Mark are no longer confined to their tiny boxes with the gals stuck on their tiny chairs.

Funny thing is, not a whole lot different than things were before the whole 9:00 revamp a few months back.

I cannot tell you how happy I was when I saw the small change today.

I just hope things work out fast.
Best of luck to you all.

You know Sam it's nice to see someone at KTLA say what we, the long time viewers have been saying from the start of this mess. I would guess that Mr. Goldern was the driving force behind the massive mistakes of the 9AM hour. And it's fitting he was shown the door and it's karma that the "Top Dog" has been sent to the pound. His response to the comments of the viewers was both unprofessional and crass. Granted some of the comments from viewers were too, but I think that came out of frustration than dislike for the on air talent. You guys and ladies took the blunt of the comments and held your heads high. If your new bosses want to know how to make things better, they should listen to the feed back from the people who count the most . . . the viewers. It will take time to get back what was lost. But these blogs will help with that. Communication is the key. KTLA has a great news team, with much of the credit going to the late, great Hal Fishmen. KTLA needs to build on what it does best. Being Los Angeles's morning news show. The news we turn on at the start of the day, and the news we turn off at the end of the day. Good luck to you and everyone with the new bosses. And I hope KTLA will once again be the shining jewel of Los Angeles news.

To Sam Rubin

I too am glad that KTLA is trying to fix the problems it has. It's great to see you and Mark at the desk but Water Cooler Buzz needs to be called what it really is "Hot Topics".

I'm hoping KTLA will be my place for news cause for years I was a KCBS viewer but no longer since the april firings and wanna find a station I can turn to to get news.

Sam, first let me say Thank You for your update to what is going on behind the scenes. That being said, I will have to echo Paul 100%. I truly believe that you, Mark and Eric (and a few others) care about your long-time and faithful viewer ship but there are others who care more about themselves and have ego problems or chips on their shoulders. When you are “beaten down”, as you put it a few weeks ago, it is going to take time to repair those wounds, if at all. I can appreciate that finally someone is trying to fix this mess but as I told Eric, apologizes and acknowledgements need to be made to YOUR viewers who have been rudely told to “get over it”, “stop watching”, “grow balls” etc. As we were all taught when we were young, that is the first step in healing.

KTLA is finally heading in the right direction and your viewers will continue to comment but you can’t ask for comments then ignore or belittle the opinion. I personally would prefer not to hear from Ms. Roxanne in responses, as she tends to enjoy adding fuel to a fire that needs to be put out.

I will give you the benefit of doubt Sam. You, Mark and Eric are the only ones that I take at their word when it comes to what you say. As the saying goes, “Time will tell”.

Sam, thank you so much for admitting that mistakes were made and that Karma came through! Of course haven't we die hard KTLA'ers been saying that since March 17th.
See Sam, we LOYAL VIEWERS do know what we like. We have and are still fighting hard for what we believe in.
Read the blogs Sam. Have the new management read the blogs. I'm sure we will still be sending in Viewer Mail - but, honestly Sam you have lost a good number of regular viewers. It may be real hard to get some of them back. READ THE PAST BLOGS for suggestions.
I find it kind of ironic that your comments about the "Love Guru" and Jimmy Kimmel were what they were. Now you know how we the viewers feel about a good majority of the "skits" that are performed during the Morning News Show - especially the ones with Warren. You all sit and laugh your heads off at them, when we sit and think "WTF"! You now know how we feel.
Some very good suggestions have been listed in Frank's last blog and Eric's blog about the changes in the 9 AM hour - I encourage you and your new management, READ THEM! Read them NOW! Don't make us continuously have to repeat ourselves. YOU DO THE HOMEWORK this time. READ OUR BLOG COMMENTS. That will give you all our views that we have in common. And there are several that management can enact upon immediately.
Thank you Sam for more or less saying KTLA was wrong! All though no one person has taken responsibility for it yet - perhaps that person is one who has been shown the door.
Perhaps Ms. Acuna's responses to us will be less sarcastic now!

SAM, IT IS GREAT TOO SEE THE
MEN BACK @ THE 9:00 AM HOUR,
IT IS SO MUCH BETTER TO GET BOTH SIDES OF THE TOPICS,
AND YOU DON'T HAVE TOO BE IN THE SAME ROOM TO DO IT.
BOB PALMER

OH MY GOD every year I am right and David Cook is the latest!!!!!

"In the last several months at KTLA we have made some massive mistakes, and as karma would have it, those who forced those mistakes upon you and us, have all been shown the door."

Thank goodness. Karma has a way of doing just that, doesn't it?

I'm glad changes are being made, Sam, but I felt screwed over by the past management in a big way. I don't know if I really care about the show as much as I did anymore, now that I've explored other options. I currently watch another morning show from another state online at 9am and enjoy it much more than the 9am mess. However, I did watch yesterday because Eric wrote that some changes had been made. I hopeful that changes continue to be done. Perhaps then, I will come back to KTLA, but I'm wary (and weary) because of what happened.

Thank you, Sam, for acknowledging the viewers' complaints and letting us know that we actually mean something to KTLA.

Sam I am so glad to hear about the changes and that Mr. Nut Kracker is gone. But on the other hand I am sadden because watching your show hasn't been the same. Being dissed by the likes of Michaela, Cher and Jessica (the newcomers) when I was watching the show while they were still in school is going to take a lot to get over. Every time I look at them I can see them saying "Get over it, or grow a set", and I have to work hard to get that out of my mind. I really think those "chicks" need to apologize for their smug attitudes. First you ladies tell us to don't watch and now you want us back. I hate to be as rude as they are but my behind is ready for some serious ass kissing if you know what I mean. I am torn only because I do love you, Mark, Eric and Frank. You guys are the only ones who remained professional throughout this whole debacle.
I hope I can forgive and watch again.

Sam you are so right. I stopped watching that 9:00 hour. the set up was atrocious and so amateurish. I love KTLA news and especially you and Mark and that hour with everyone pandering in that stupid set up just turned me off. Why couldn't the guest move around the desk to kiss Michaela as well as the others. so stupid to set one up to get affection and the other 2 or mostly Michaela get the high five or blown kiss or whatever the hell someone would do to acknowledge her. I am a woman and love women but come on with the mens comments it is so much better.
ps: your worst guest ever was Steve Madden. If he had self promoted himself one more time I would have come down there and choked him. I guess he thought that self promoting didn't show his ignorance in not knowing what the hell you were talking about.
now to the David's. David Cook appears to be an amazing person with a great heart and soul. he is fresh and different and love his performances. David A is a product of I don't know what with an amazing voice. Face it he will get an album but thank God the grownups of the world spared us from having him as the Idol which he is so not!!!! and bless Simon for apologizing to David Cook.....he can be respectful and do the right thing!!!
Love you guys!

Sam My Friend...

I don't know WHAT KARMA you are referring to.. We think you guys ROCK!

I was watching when you came on today and..You really looked "sad", and I went immediately and read your blog...

Tell the Tribune folks.. my former employer 100 years ago..(!@#?) that YOU GUYS ROCK, and HAVE KEPT YOUR FOLLOWING FOR DECADES!!!.. in LA!?!?!?!?.. Tribune "Decision Makers,".. what a bunch of meddlers!.. HAHA

YOU COME FROM THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY LIVE THERE.. You are like friends to ALL OF US.. you are the most DOWN TO EARTH.. APPROACHABLE News Team Out there! I never email ANY other news station, but have sent a few to you guys since I found you on the air in Canada.

I was SO HAPPY to finally be able to see you again.. now being in Vancouver for my husband's job :-0... it's nice, but I MISS LA!

I believe you ALL keep it interesting BECAUSE of WHO YOU ARE, and the RELATIONSHIPS YOU HAVE with everyone of your loyal viewers. People who have watched "you and Mark kibbutz" forever.., which NOW MAKES THE WATER COOLER SEGMENT AT 9 .. EVEN MORE FUN!!
I worked at a Major Studio in Publicity a long time ago, and even then.. remember you to be personable, approachable and fun, which in LA is VERY rare.., when under the gun of creating press junkets, premiers, and dealing with everyone involved.

Today I am glad you guys are there to watch, if Tribune changes ANYTHING... they will surely ruin it! They have the habit of putting in the "corporate stuffed shirts," and immediately taking the power from the viewer, the enjoyment from whatever project, and eliminate the "Color of it all," and want to make it all "Navajo White!"..WE LOVE EXACTLY HOW IT IS!

Let me try to cheer you up Sam...HAHA...Check out my Art.. lovebulbs.com... (Currently finishing up one for Gayle as a gift..shh don't tell her!)..

http://youtube.com/watch?v=MNekqTrbzTE

I hope it makes you smile today!

Have a Good Day Sam!!
EVERYONE LOVES YOU GUYS..
Mark still looks good, Frank & Eric too, Gayle's stories EVERYDAY have merit...you have all these informative areas like Cyber Guy and Commander Chuck..now you have all these great girls at 9..

With a little luck.. my email will help you to show them your fans CARE A LOT, and WOULD WATCH OTHER CHANNELS if they ROCK THE BOAT!

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!

Sam, How come no one seems to want to address the "Elephant in the Room" that we have been asking for now for over 2 months?
RATINGS SAM - WHAT ARE THE RATINGS?
We know they have to be bad, but why won't you give us the ratings? You are the Entertainment Person are you not?
I WANT THE RATINGS!!!!
If you won't give them for March 3rd and each week like we've been begging for, at least give us MAY SWEEPS!
You can blame this fiasco on people that are no longer there to defend themselves and call it Karma that's fine - BUT GIVE US THE RATINGS!

Sam says; "But in the course of trying to do better, we may do some things worse."

I guess you're referring to that extremely lame skit you just did with your "supposed" David Archuletta.
Come on Sam! You can't complain about Mike Meyers and his skit and then do that lame thing you call a skit and not think that we won't criticize you for it!

You know, you don't have to try so hard. Sam, just change back to the old format bring in Frank like it used to be, put Jessica on some kind of tranquilizer if you insist on keeping her on set and go back to the way it used to be. Stop the skits! They aren't funny!

This is still the best morning show by far but I would like Gayle do more than just cars and Hollywood museum pieces. KTLA also hit a wall keeping Jessica. I'm sure she is real nice however, she sits on my last nerve. I never watch the 9:00 show and when she is on, in any capacity, I mute her.

By the way, my favorite Idol moment last night besides David Cook winning was Carly and Michael's duet.

Well Sam, I’m impressed. KTLA finally for the first time in 2 months pre-empted the morning show for IMPORTANT news going on, (unlike the past). This kind of reporting is why KTLA was #1 for so many years. I’m glad to see the new management is taking KTLA in the right direction…finally.

I watch from 6:30am to 7:30am and have no complaints. I think the KTLA morning show ROCKS because of the great chemistry between the news anchors. I do not know what the whole hubbub at 9AM is about, but I hope it gets resolved without letting any of my favorite news anchors go.

I also watch you guys until 8:00. I love all you guys. Don't know what happened the last few months, but i love you guys. Keep it up.

First of all I am not sure what the big fuss is about? All this talk about people doing wrong on KTLA. I am a loyal viewer every morning! I think all you guys are great. Yes, I think sometimes the opinions are a bit too much information, but then again it is just that person's opinion. We can either agree or disagree and move.
Now, to the American Idol's infomercials etc... SO let it be, if you have an opportunity to sell something where there's a large audience why not? This is the USA. I think the Public announcement letting the teens know that if they just PAUSE they might make a good decision to not go any further with the whole sex thing. That was a good announcement. They are just using they're target audience and I believe helping them and of course helping themselves.
Again just my opinion.

Hi Sam, I love the morning show and would never change. I really appreciate hearing all the local news, and since we are near Hollywood we get the inside scoop from you which is always fun. I love all the anchors and would cry if any of them left the show. I think Makayla and Frank set the tone as real professionals. I like Mark's spunkiness and refusal to be PC. He makes me giggle. Gayle is precious and lovable and Jessica is young, vivacious and fun! Please don't change a thing!

As far as the 9 o'clock hour goes, I like the mix of the 3 women. Without really trying, they achieved what The View could not: they have a mix of ages, stages of life, and political points of view that GET ALONG, respectful of each other! I love it. I love the input from the guys, but the girls should be the focal point. It is a good idea since women mostly watch at this hour. Even men enjoy watching these smart and interesting (and pretty too!) ladies.
Don't know what the bloggers are so upset about. Time to move on. I wish you all a lot of blessings and good things.

Oh "rosebud" all I can say is I'm LMFAO at your post! Thank God, Dreams Are Free!!
Please don't speak for me on your saccharin filled post when you state; "Even men enjoy watching these smart and interesting (and pretty too!) ladies."
Grant it you are entitled to your own opinion, but one has to wonder, with the fact that everything you mentioned is a 180 degree turn of what all of the rest of us have stated, just what position do you hold at KTLA? It's obviously one of the few that weren't "shown the door", otherwise I would think instead of posting with a pseudo-anonymous name like "rosebud" you'd have used your real name!

The problem with this show lately, in my opinion, isn't the set or the anchors (in fact, I generally like the anchors now, for the first time in a while) but the new field reporters (especially Elizabeth and Kim) and a general ambivalence to journalistic principles overall. Stop the continuous editorializing and start confirming your bloody facts if you want me back.

Where the HECK was Mark Kriski today? Mark, you were truly missed this morning. Hope you're back tomorrow!

The problem is the chemistry (anchors & viewers) is all wrong now. The respect that we the viewers once had for you has dissipated and that's the sad part. I am not speaking for everyone, just the ones who I have conversed with (blogging) here online. Although I want to give you (KTLA) another chance I feel such discomfort by the things I have witnessed over the past few months.
