Sam wonders is the 'Presumptive Nominee' actually the 'Presumptive President.'
8:44 PM June 3, 2008
It may be the biggest introduction of a little used word ever. Congratulations to the "presumptive nominee" Barack Obama. I know that is is considered verboten for people to express political opinions; but in watching the speeches of Obama and McCain Tuesday night; I think we can go one step further. I don't think it is unreasonable to suggest that Barack Obama may well be the presumptive president.
We are a country that values both style and substance. The substance of the policies of the two candidates will now be debated and vetted for the next several months. But in terms of style, can we just say it. There is no contest here. Obama is inspiration personified. McCain is comfortable. Obama is Bono, the inspiring lead singer of U2. McCain is a reliable lounge singer.
When I attended Occidental College in Eagle Rock in the early 1980's. We jokingly referred to the school as 'The Stanford Of The South.' While Oxy now enjoys a stellar reputation, at that time, I felt Oxy was a reasonable choice but certainly not a first choice. We had large clusters of students from interesting places. Washington State, Arcadia, and Hawaii. One of those Hawaii based students, Barry Barack Obama.
I suppose this might sound self-centered or slightly, dare I say, narcissistic. But maybe you went to school with a real brain, a genius in science or math; a great athlete; a person of remarkable beauty or incredible compassion. As for me, well, I went to school with the presumptive President of The United States of America. I can't complain about my station in life; in fact I find it hard to complain too much about my TV station (so many of you on the blogs here do that so well for me),. But maybe I can complain about this. If your college classmate turns out to the President of The United State; it doesn't matter how well you may succeed or how long you last in local TV; I tend to think Barry has done a little bit better than Sammy. Oh Well.
One thing that both candidates are talking about; though they have vastly different ideas about how to solve these issues; is the idea of a more compassionate America. I think this is a vital discussion. The great shame of American is the ever widening gap between have and have-nots.
I am a have.
You probably are too.
But I don't think we can hold our heads high with so many, and an increasing number of have-nots. The gap between super rich and mega poor has never been worse, and I know, that college loyality aside; when I cast my vote in November, that is going to be the #1 issue I will be thinking about.
At this moment, I don't see how Obama can lose. I really don't. I am sure come early November I will hold this blog entry up as another example of my incredible political insight; or someone else will hold it up as another example of my political idicy. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Hey Sam, totally off topic! I was watching a tape of the 8 AM hour tease for your entertainment report. You kind of slipped up in talking about coming up on the 9 o'clock hour. Instead of saying "Water Cooler Buzz" or "Hot Topics" you slipped and tried to cover your mistake and called it "HOT TALK"!
You know what? I liked that! "HOT TALK" is simple, concise and to the point. It's not the same as The View's "Hot Topics" and it's much better than "Water Cooler Buzz"!
I vote to change it to "HOT TALK"! JMHO

I find it amazing that people consistently say "they don't know who Barack Obama is". We are in the 21st century, where you all are a keystroke away from his 64 page plan on his website with his plans for America. Just as there are those who won't vote for hillary because she is a woman, there are those who won't vote for Barack solely because of his race. Those of yo who quickly deny this are probably the ones who think that way. As far as experience, Hillary has about 2 years on Obama. Those 8 years of sleeping next to the president don't make you a president material, it just gives you access. That's not the Bill & Hillary Presidential Library in Arkansas it's Bill's. And Republicans in the past have made unreasonable promises. Remember "no new taxes"? Rem

Can people be so blind to this Barack man? Becuase he 'speaks well' he can be the president? Always look at the people who the candidate surrounds himself with. This man surrounds himself with religious mentors that are downright hateful and racist. He is also friends with a well-known terrorist - in our own country! His wife speaks eloquently - but hatefully! And - most important - he WILL NOT pay homage to our flag or our national anthem. What are people thinking with? Yeah, He 'speaks good' alright!

Sam, dude, your Oxy is hanging out all over. Seriously, Barack is NO Bono.

Vickie, Vickie, Vickie name one politician who surrounds themselves with flowers. George W. not crooked? I think not. McCain not crooked? I think not. Clinton not crooked? I think not. Obama not crooked? I think not. At this stage I would have to assume they are all crooked. But you have to pick someone.
I feel the church issue has been beaten into the ground already let's just leave it there. I have been a member of my church for over 15 years and there have been a couple of times when I have brought visitors with me and my pastor would say something outrages and I would just cringe. The pastor has to answer to the higher power for misleading people. How is a church member responsible for something a Minister says? The bible says "study to show yourself approved unto God". You have to study the word for yourself and gain understanding so when your minister does say something wrong you would know the truth for yourself. But to persecute the man for something someone else said is simply outrageous.
That would be like stoning to death Mark, Sam and Frank for something stupid their EP said to their viewers. LOL. Now that wouldn't be right now would it?

Obama was on a board with a man, who committed crimes, when he was 4 years old... and again he was on a board with the man-- that's all. George W. Bush helped Saudis who were related to Bin Laden or known to be friends of his, get out of the country (right after 9/11), when all air flight was supposedly suspended. Even his own father George H. W. Bush was stranded in Cleveland. Don't make haphazard statements just to be correct.

Vicki, as LaToya said the Religious issue has been beaten to death regarding Obama. Haven't we all had people in our lives that have said things that have made us all cringe?
As for the plain out false LIES that you are spreading regarding Obama, the flag and the pledge of Allegiance - I urge you to go to snopes.com and get these LIES verified. It only requires a few minutes of homework to get to the truth.
I urge you to stop being a sheep, stop drinking the Neo Con Kool Aid. So many of the fallacies you mention are just that - FALLACIES. I'm sure you are better than that!

I have a feeling that history is going to be very, very good to President George W. Bush.....especially after the next four years of which ever candidate gets elected!!!

BrettNOC - Be careful what you wish for!!!!!
You're too funny! You got me good on that one!!!

To BrettNOC: Please, "put Jessica in your pocket" and take her away forever! I think that would please a lot of people.

Dan, you know you are my buddy, But I did have to laugh at BrettNOC's comment to you. It was quite funny. I have to agree with Maria too, she's is small enough to put in your pocket.

The bottom line of all of this is now that Sam's said this, how can we ever count on him to be at all impartial on matters regarding Obama from this point on?
No, from now through November, each and every Obama comment uttered by Sam must be considered an unpaid Obama ad.
Normally I'd say we can count on Sam to be professional, but once a news professional admits their preference - rather than just letting it be implied - they become a commentator.
Posted by: Bill | June 06, 2008 at 08:01 AM
God Bill - get off your Hate Obama High Horse! We get it - you don't like the candidate. You can dislike him, but just because Sam blogged about it doesn't mean "each and every Obama comment uttered by Sam must be considered an unpaid Obama ad". If that's the only thing in your life that you have to waste so much negative energy on, if that's the only thing in your life that is wrong with this World, you are truly a very lucky man!

Bill says; "It's just too bad that the "change" he will be bringing will be to destroy the very things that have made America a success for the past 232 years."
Sorry Bill, that ship sailed in January of 2001 when George Bush was inaugurated. Nobody has hurt this great Country of OURS more than George W. Bush. It's a shame that people assume and seem to be able to predict the future and make claims about a man that isn't even in office yet. Nothing can be worse than if Mc Cain gets in and we have 4 more years of the last 8 years.

Rose bud says: I have a feeling that history is going to be very, very good to President George W. Bush.....especially after the next four years of which ever candidate gets elected!!!
Oh my little rosebud, GAS IS $5.O0 A GALLON...now that's History. We are not in a "slow down" as your great President said, we are in a RECESSION!!! All he needs to do for the next four years is either bury his head in the sand or take his comedy act on the road.

By the comment's we all seem to know the problem's this country has,it's the solution's we lack.Obama is by no mean's the solution. This is a man who turned his back on a friend, his Pastor for how many year's? And for what?a few misguided comment's.He bad mouthed his grand mother,a woman who helped raise him,his family.Wat kind of loyalty will he show this country?Clinton stood next to a man who not only betrayed her but embarressed her and this country. She not only has shown she can make change but is loyal dipite betrayal, embarrasment, and heartache. It is a scary and sad thing when we see all the problem's this country has but won't grasp the solution when it's there

My God Paula, is there anything Obama can do that will please any of the Neo Cons? They bitched when he wouldn't distance himself from his pastor, and now they're bitching because he did separate himself. In fact half seem to bitch because it wasn't soon enough and the other half bitch because he's not being loyal to his pastor after 20 years. My God, what the Hell do you people want? No wonder this country is in the mess it's in. You don't know your rear from a hole in the ground and you're already trying to blame this world's atrocities on a man that hasn't even gotten into office yet. How about the irrefutable damage this present President and his administration have done, and how McCain will only carry on most of the FAILED Bush policies if he's elected.
And Obama didn't bad mouth his grandmother...he told it like it is - he spoke of her bigotry. If he hadn't done that you'd be on his back because it would eventually come out and you'd say; "Oh see, his grandma was a bigot and he didn't say anything." Sometimes you of the predominantly white, male racist Neo "CON" party are so pathetic! What are you really afraid of, the fact that this man could change this country for the better? He might be able to accomplish something that no other candidate has ever been able to do? BE FAIR AND EQUAL FOR ALL MEN!
Posted by: Jason | June 06, 2008 at 01:17 PM
Paula, you do realize that Hillary is now standing behind Obama to unite the Democratic Party right? It's time the rest of those in that party do the same thing. Hopefully he'll pick her as his running mate and we'll have the Super Party candidates!
Posted by: Sean | June 06, 2008 at 01:24 PM
Sam the arsonist. You really started one Hot topic here. I wish what your heart says is true but one can NEVER underestimate the RepubliCONs spin machine. Right now your very own KTLA poll showed McCain drasticly in front of Obama and most other polls show them even. California is a blue state now but does have a Republican governor so the predominately pro-Obama comments here are meaninglessly although to me, encouraging. Regarding Bono - I don't think he's that good of a singer but the meaning of his lyrics are true to the heart.
Bill you may also add that under Democratic rule Japanese Americans were put into camps. But don't forget it was the Republican party who led us into the Great Depression and a democratic president who got us going again. The Democratic party also led the way in civil rights in the '60's. I disagree with your global warming stand.
Rick, President Bush may have been gelded during the Viet Nam War. I for one NEVER felt threatened by Iraq having seen the lie of forged documents while watching C-Span BEFORE the invasion. President Bush COULD have gone done in history as a great president if he had not been so ambitious. If he had concentrated our forces in Afghanistan and gotten Osama Bin Laden. The whole world would have continued to view us as a shinning light on a hill. When you have people on the inside of the administration like Richard Clarke and Scott McClellan giving their viewpoints and then having the spin machine calling them disguntled employees - when you have Republican Federal Judges coming forward that political actions take over the rules of law - If you still believe in a candidate that supports the previous adminstration - You are a closed minded individual.
Emily congratulations on making over $250,000 a year. You should be worried about taxes. If not then you can do what your fellow Republicans love to do - USE YOUR CREDIT CARD.
Raul, Don't forget there was a surplus in the National Treasury when Bill Clinton was there. I like how you exclude the power of lobbyists since Mr. McCain is also Mr. Lobbyist. But I do agree with you to vote a lot of them out. I, for one donated to Shirley Golub campaign to replace Nancy Pelosi. If ever there was a president who should have been impeached.... How about the time the Republicans in the House turned off all the democratic microphones. I guess blame them for not getting into a fist fight with the Republicans.
Amen to Phooey and may I add George VETO Bush has a lot to do with bills being passed or VETOED.
Sorry my rant is so long but in closing. We are Californians. Our national representatives of the Senate went to President Bush regarding the STEALING OF OUR MONEY from the ENRON scam. President Bush chose the side of his Enron friends over our well being and finances. McCain believes we are on the right track and will continue to follow in President Bush's footsteps. McCain is bullish over attacking Iran. If you like McCain, if he gets in, if he attacks Iran - NO CRYING IN GASOLINE PRICES NEAR $10.
