Urgent from Sam -- Heath Ledger in 'The Dark Knight.'

10:27 PM  June 26, 2008

I just returned from a screening and I wanted to commit this to a public forum as quickly as possible. Heath Ledger gives a blockbuster performance in the new Batman movie. His work, as The Joker, will absolutely be nominated for an Oscar, and at this point in the year, Ledger is also a hands-down favorite to win it posthumously. Ledger offers perfect pitch, perfect tone, his Joker hits all the right notes. 'The Dark Knight' is among the better super-hero movies of all time, and Ledger is THE BEST villain in a super hero movie of all time. Really. It will only add to the conversation of all that Ledger could have accomplished had he lived. Amazing work.

Sam,

Thanks for the info on the new Batman film. From what little I have seen in previews clips Heath Ledger looked great. It's a shame that his career was so short.
I look forward to seeing the film.

I haven't seen the film (can't wait, though), but until I do, I'll be skeptical on these claims. It's a textbook case of posthumous rose-colored glasses--the same phenomenon that has elevated John Kennedy to "great president" status.

I called him winning an Oscar a couple of months after he died...this confirms what I've been saying all along. I can't wait to see this movie!

LOL... yeah right. An Oscar for a comic book character. They let children write news stories now?

How predictable. People are always 5 times their stature after they die.

Why are people responding to this Bozo's SPECULATION as if it's fact? He's WAY OFF BASE HERE FOLKS.

Uh, Ian? Someone else speculating about what will happen in the future isn't exactly "confirmation" of your amazing "prediction". Shattap till the movie's out.

he was a bum. Never heard of him until he died. Maybe he is the white Tupac.

... and I predict that, should Terry Gilliam finish Heath Ledger's presumed last film, THAT will also garner the star with a posthumous Oscar. As a matter of fact, I predict Ledger will be given Oscars, in the future, for films he never even appeared in.

Most reviews before films come out are by promotion dept when they think film might be stinker

As expected people will now blow his joker out of proportion. There are critics out there comparing this to Godfather II, how ridiculous. The same people probably loved Epic movie.

Good imput, but i think you are mistaken. Morgen Freeman is the highlight of this film... Seriously slide show, he's in it.

Its amazing how spectacular a celebrity becomes if they die young. We've all seen it with James Dean and again with River Phoenix and then Kurt Cobain. They were all good actors and/or muscians but their deaths magnify their talents. If Ledger were still alive, people would not be pushing him for the Oscar in this role.

Over the last few days that the film has been screened to the press and other prominent people in the industry- all you hear is the same acollated for ledger: "mad crazy-crazy-blazing-brillant", "he joker for the ages", "THE BEST villain in a super hero movie of all time",I mean; At some point you have to say- HOLY S***! LEDGER WAS THE S***!!

I've seen a pre-screening of the movie, and while it is an amazing follow-up to the first Bale Batman movie, and Ledger gives a fantastic, scary, full-on-nutcase, brilliant performance....I only see an Oscar if Hollywood wants to comfirm what we already know. They're media whores who would only be doing it for publicity. It's a great role, but not career-defining.

Wow.. so many mean spirited responses. The white Tupac he was a bum? Just because he is portraying a comic book character he cant win? This is just some persons review because she saw the movie. Thats all. Go see it and make your own judgements. Heath had issues obviously but he was known as a pretty strong actor

Look you don't have to be haters...but I'd be willing to put money in Vegas on this...If he gives a great performance, which I think he will, it will feel right to give him the nod. My statements aren't about fact but just an observation of human nature. It's not that I'm a great fan of Heath's personal life either but I've always thought he was a solid actor.

i think keith is playing dead to get the sympathy vote.

Before we fall down and worship the beast, let us remember that it seems like "true" acting talent these days is hard to find. Why is it that that any more, "successful artists" are also crack whores, cokeheads, and heroin addicts? I never really thought Ledger was any better that the tens of thousands other waiters and waitresses who call his or her self an "actor." Could it be that mediocre talent has to be stoned to rise to the level of being considered good? Yet, despite this the world fawns at their feet ignoring the fact that the Amy Wonehouses and Heath Ledgers of the world sooner or later crash while blazing the path for young people to adopt these self destructive lifestyles.

Captain Howdy has nothing better to do with his time than lurk blogs and post demeaning comments like these. I'm glad he's so sure on the Oscar picks for next year. Someone get him a podium.

He doesn't even portray the Joker correctly (putting white cake powder on yoru face alone and drawing a bad smile in red lipstick = misrepresentation of the Joker)

I look at his death because of portraying the character incorrectly; look at Raul Julia and the Street Fighter movie. He portrayed the villian, M Bison due to the crappy script and film maker and died shortly after filming. Same could be said with Heath Ledger.

Because of a crappy script and inept director, leading to him portraying the Joker so very incorrectly, led to his death.

Heath Ledger's performance in the new Batman is a poor imitation of Jack Nicholson's. I love Ledger but I was HIGHLY disappointed in how much he drew from Jack. It really really made me sad about his death and the supposed reports he was getting so much into the character he changed. R.I.P.

Secondly, all this Oscar talk is really silly. What is with you people? They just handed out Oscars a few months ago. It's bad enough he passed away....but we all know Hollywood.

I suggest each and every one of you watch Waiting For Guffman before you indulge in all this preemptive academy award talk.

As I understand it, Heath kept the same make-up on during his entire movie shoot, only touching it up as needed to make it look as bad as it did. Good touch, nice look for the Joker.

OMFG, now Drudge has scooped up this poo.

I think someone should moderate these comments.

Seriously, what's with the nasty attitude, folks?
Lighten up.
