BUCKLEY BLOG: Hal Fishman and Dance Party Friday
11:56 AM August 8, 2008
A year ago this week, our friend and colleague Hal Fishman passed away. It happened suddenly--just a week after many of us had attended a gala dinner in his honor. Hal was a giant here at KTLA, a giant in this business, a giant in Southern California. I wish he was still with us.
While a year has passed since Hal's death, we are reminded of his legacy every time we walk through the front door of the Hal Fishman Newsroom where a plaque with Hal's likeness guards the front entrance. Not to sound strange, but I think many of us here at KTLA occasionally wonder to ourselves: What would Hal do in this situation?
I doubt he'd participate in Dance Party Friday (though Hal did have a great sense of humor), and I suspect some of the silly features we sometimes do on the Morning News would bring a scowl to his face. But Hal as much as anyone knew that the business of how the news is presented is always changing and I hope he'd understand.
In the 47 years Hal anchored the news in Southern California, the way the news was delivered, the technology involved in gathering and distributing the news and various other aspects of TV news changed a great deal. What stayed the same were the fundamentals--like getting it right and being fair. Even as we go through another transition period in this business and at this station, we're doing our level best to stay focused on those fundamentals.
I hope you've noticed that we're doing more news in our program than ever before. Yes, we still do our best to make you smile every morning and for some, we may have too much fun. But our new executive producer, Scott A. Warren, said something the other day that really resonated with me. He said: "If we do the news right, that gives us the right to have fun on our show."
So we're actually putting more news into our five hours every morning, we're breaking away to more "live" news, we're putting more news into sections of the show that used to just see a feature story or banter. I agree with those of you who've said at times, we've overdone it--that we stayed too long with a single breaking news story. I think you've probably noticed we've dialed that back a little and I think we're pretty close to where we need to be on those "breaking" stories. But as always, your voice matters and we're listening, so tell us what you think.
I'm going on vacation today and it marks the end of my first year as one of the news anchors of the mighty KTLA Morning News. It's been a difficult year at times--from Hal's death, to management comings and goings, to the departure of some trusted colleagues. I'll use my time off to think about where we've come from and where we're headed. I'm also planning to spend some wonderful, quality time with my family. I'll come back in a couple of weeks recharged and ready to move forward with the rest of the team and with you.
Thanks for allowing me to come into your living rooms every morning for the past year. It's been an honor.

Thank YOU Frank! When Carlos left last year we wondered if the "new guy" was going to measure up. You've done more than that and continue to be one of the many reasons folks like us clear across the country in South Carolina enjoy KTLA's morning news.

Frank,
I think Hal would be proud of the work that you, Eric and Bill have done since his passing. On the other hand I doubt he would approve of the changes that happen since March, especially the 9:00 estrogen fluff hour. The morning news was fine, it wasn't broke. I'm for fun, but I tune in to a news show for news. Not lame skits or stupid "Water Cooler Buzz" that is a total waste. Now it seems that you are all try to go back to what you had, only because you have lost viewership. It may be too late. I for one don't watch KTLA anymore. Maybe when more "good" changes are in place I may come back. But it's still a mess. Anyway have a nice vacation and I hope you have something good to come back to.

I have to agree Frank, you've done a superb job in filling some pretty big shoes!
I sure do miss watching you in the mornings.
I haven't watched the KTLA Morning News for probably about 2 months now. Too many promises that were never met. Too many times our being asked for what we would like to see happen. The majority wanted it to go back to the way it was prior to March 17th. That didn't happen either. You being taken off the 9 AM hour at the anchor desk was a real big reason I don't watch anymore. Too much of an Estrogen Hour from 9 to 10 and instead of keeping "Hot Topics" they insist on calling it "Water Cooler Buzz".
I just don't watch anymore. I really do miss you but you are the only anchor I miss from there. When you're back from vacation, maybe I'll give it a try....but, I just can't stomach a good majority of the show anymore. I'm so sorry! Prior to March 17th, the 9 AM hour was Dynamite! You and Sam and Mark behind the desk, with Michaela out front and discussing Hot Topics with an "A" List Celebrity, DJ Hapa spinning tunes....Best Morning Show EVER! Then Black Monday came and they ruined the Morning Show! I'm sorry I don't like it anymore! And bring back Willa and Bill! Getting rid of both of them was so disrespectful to them, to us the viewers, and to you and your colleagues. Then to bring in the people they did to replace them, even more of an insult. They could so easily get the numbers back in the morning, if they'd go back to the Old Format that wasn't broken - it would take time, but you'd get a good majority back! Unfortunately, that's what a good majority of people have been saying for 5 months now, you ask, we tell you, and it goes IGNORED. At least if one of TPTB would "grow a set" and blog as to why they won't fulfill the wishes of the viewers - we could possibly understand. Their silence speaks volumes.
Have a great and wonderful time with your family and maybe I'll check back in 2 weeks when you return!

You've got to love the irony and the persistence of a few of you. Eric, YOU, and either Mark or Sam (probably Mark since Sam doesn't give a rat's behind what we think) have in the past shown you really care about the product of show you put out. You care too about the ratings, which 5 months later we have still yet to get from your so called Entertainment Person.
I digress, you few seem to care enough to ask us periodically "how can WE make the Morning News better, etc." We keep telling you, over, and over again how to do it. Yet, nothing happens! From what I hear you keep having the same lame skits, the majority of the bloggers just come here to read the updates on the blog and don't watch anymore. Just WHO ARE YOU ASKING? The few that seem to blog and tell you, never seem to be heard! If we send it via "Viewer Mail"...first we got sarcastic rude replies from Roxanne Acuna, now we just get a generic "Thank you for your email and for watching the show".
So, again, WHO ARE YOU ASKING how to improve the show and for what reason? Is there anybody there who truly cares what we the viewers think? I have to echo everything said prior to me. You want us back - SIMPLE go back to prior to March 17 and use that as your promo....YOU ASKED AND WE FINALLY HEARD! It took us 5 months but WE FINALLY HEARD!
The worst that could happen is that your ratings would go up! They can't drop much further from going back to what the majority seem to want, can they???

Old man, time to turn young again. A vacation will do that. Have fun, enjoy watching your kids have fun and don't let the computer get in the way.

Frank said: "Even as we go through another transition period in this business and at this station, we're doing our level best to stay focused on those fundamentals."
More changes ahead? (groan) Hopefully "transition" doesn't mean another on-air personality shake up. The line up has gotten very confusing. We're still guessing whether Bill Smith is or isn't on staff.
In all honesty, we haven't noticed a shift toward more news in the morning. We'll pay attention next week. We have enjoyed the daily themes: various expert views on rising gas prices, bus transportation, biking to work, energy efficient cars. Let's hear more about the economy - lots of shut down kiosks and closed small businesses at local malls, monthly drawings for free gas at grocery stores to encourage business, dwindling number of entry-level jobs. Last week I watched one potential applicant after another turned away from Borders bookstore. Linen & Things next door is liquidating. Starbuck's next to Linens will soon be closing. Is there an end in sight?
Enjoy your family vacation in England. Don't forget to come back.

"Even as we go through another transition period in this business and at this station"
And yet, it could have all been avoided if they'd have stuck to the motto; IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!

I'm sorry Frank to go off topic, I have a question and it might help others to understand why the viewership has so drastically dropped at KTLA in the Mornings.
I sent a very concerned email to "Viewer Mail" asking how long Mark Kriski has been on "vacation" and if he still in fact works there. I feel that's a legitimate question, and I receive that very sarcastic, generic reply from one Ms. Roxanne Acuna saying; "Hello,
Thanks for your email and thanks for watching the show!
Have a good day!"
How do you ever, ever, expect to increase your viewership and your ratings when you have arrogant people like that generically replying to our "Viewer Mail".
I am appalled. I asked a simple question wondering if Mark was still there and she didn't even have the decency to reply. This viewer is now gone for good! Way to go Ms. Acuna!
Does anyone know, IS MARK KRISKI STILL WITH THE MORNING NEWS?

Frank, I wholeheartedly believe that Hal would be one of your biggest fans.
Although I personally don't watch the Morning News any longer (and it was by no fault of yours) I know that you bring professionalism and honest integrity to the program that old-time KTLA fans yearn for and deserve.
As a side note on Hal Fishman, he was my sister's professor at Cal State LA in the early 60's. She only had positive things to say about him. In those days, Hal was extremely popular on newscasts in the LA basin.

Frank,
Now that was a great entry! Yes indeed, Mr. Fishman is deeply missed by us KTLA Die Hards. His rough style of all-out HARD NEWS is missed and will never be forgotten. Props to you and the current team for your great delivery and fair reporting. I truly hope that the upper-management can see through all of that TMZ-ish haze and see the value in a future with "Franchise" reporters that our kids can grow with.

I came to this post late, but I agree with everyone else. I like watching Frank, but I can't stomach the show anymore. I used to get the news I wanted, along with some humor. Now it's fluff. Bleech. I had watched every morning for fifteen years, until this past spring.

I think I have to agree with Dan, I too miss the "Hot Topics". It was much more interesting than the "Water Cooler Buzz". It's hard to believe Hal's been gone for a year already. I sure miss hearing his commentaries every night during his Prime Time News cast. And you never know, Hal may have joined in the Dance Party!
