BUCKLEY BLOG: The Final Debate--Who Won?

8:57 PM  October 15, 2008

I just caught the end of the Dodgers game tonight. Unfortunately, it wasn't much of a game and our dream of a World Series appearance (against Boston, I had hoped) is over for this season. But there was a pretty good contest on CNN earlier. It was the final debate between John McCain and Barack Obama.

Did you see it? My first impression? It was the best of the series. We heard policy. We saw body language and facial reactions on a split screen. We had a clash of ideas and a difference in style.

Who won? I've got my thoughts on it but you're probably tired of hearing pundits and reporters and anchors tell you what they thought. I know I am. I want to know what you think.

I think Obama won this final debate. I expect to see the percentage of voters for McCain decrease even more now.

I will be so glad to see this election over and done with. It's been incredibly nasty, especially on McCain's side. He continues to come across as a nasty-spirited man. I certainly don't want him (or his running mate) in the Oval Office.

Actually, there's probably no such thing as a "nasty-spirited" man. How about - He continues to come across as a mean-spirited and bitter man?

That fits even better.

Obama Baby all the way. Even after Barack told John about the negative campaigning and that he wanted to focus on the topics that the people wanted to hear, McCain kept the LIES going.
And what the Heck is with McCain and those damn "air quotes"? Not only is he just down right rude he interupted Obama again in this debate and continues to come off as an OLD crotchity old Man! Obama came off so much more Presidential, even the critics on the news shows are all saying that!

Obama/Biden 08

Again Obama Rocked it!!!

All the networks reported that Obama won!

Obama came off cool. calm, un-frazzeled, downright presidential and most important... believable.

McCain came off angry contemptuous, condescending, and downright ill tempered. His smile was eerily forced as if he was trying to hold his dentures in!

The middle class ...which yet again McCain didn't even mention. That same middle class is NOT buying McCain's rhetoric!

Bar-rack the vote !!
PLM

Did anyone notice this? Each time Barack Obama shaked John McCain's hand, MaCain would wipe his hand on his jacket. What was that all about. I did hear about McCain being a racist. Rewatch the end of the debate and see for yourself.

"I did hear about McCain being a racist"? What is that all about?! Check out facts, don't add more speculation.

It bothers me how people rely so much on the media to give them their sense of direction. "All the networks reported..." Let people choose for themselves. Media gives such a slant to what they call information.

No, I don't think that Obama won. I don't agree that he is more presidential, and I don't think he has the background to be the next President.

Yes and you also don't think McCain is a racist? I guess people screaming Kill Him means they like him?

Palin never opened her mouth when the same thing was screamed at her rallies. Mccain only spoke up when they said Obama was an Arab. He did not say anything when they screamed Kill him!

Obama is ahead whether you like it or Not. He IS presidential ...He is not cranky... older than dirt... and he is fair inspite of the republican effort to pull into the mud slinging thay seems to be the only thing they've got to work with!

Neither did!

Neither understands the Nations monetary system of every Federal reserve Note has to be borrowed from the privately own FED + interest. which means that both of these candidates policies will put the country further in debt to a privately own Banking system, Which is as federal as federal express with no reserves..

THis will require those who have not been born as of yet to pay taxes to pay for their polices. This is taxation without representation and a violation of the 13th amendment our children will be debt slaves..

The comment that put the teacher and the firefighter in the same pay scale bothered me. Where most teachers make less than $50,000 dollars a year most firefighters can make over $100,000 a year after over time of which we know teachers cannot get.

Neither Won!

But - McCain showed "socialism" will not work in this country and I do not want to be taxed to death. Socialism in America? Do we not remember the United Soviet Socialist Republic??

Obama - as normal was calm, cool and no real answers.
All the Obama supporters should really look at why they support this man!

America won because we all saw a big difference!

McCain had his moments earlier making his points on tax policies using Joe the Plumber and small businesses but when he continued to emphasize the Ayres ties, ect. after Obama definitively answered it and seeing McCain's facial reactions, it just showed who will be cool under pressure and who will lose their cool, act impulsively and make huge errors in judgment. Also, McCain couldn't answer Obama's charge that his running mate didn't do anything to stop the "hatred and death threats" that she encouraged at her rallies with her speeches. Obama's supposed negative campaigning to be clear focuses on McCain's policies and Senate voting record and are not personal attacks as a person like the McCain campaign levies against Obama! That is the difference!
Also, Obama won the last part of the debate handily on health care, abortion and education and McCain's attempts to constantly interrupt and bring in non-sequiter arguments that made no sense were almost comical if this election year wasn't so serious!! After awhile, his Joe the plumber reference got a little tired as well. Been there -Done that John!! You made your point with Joe the Plumber in the first 20-30 minutes. Overall - Obama wins because he still looks more Presidential and stay cool and controlled under pressure and he will bring a great team around him to advise him!!

Well said Craig!

You see folks, even when Obama was given a big softball to hit when the question was asked what you thought of the others running mate, Obama deferred not to attack, smart enough to know that can only backfire on him when he is in the lead. McCain decided to attack some of Biden's policies anyway, knowing going after the No. 2 is a risky move. The only comment Obama made regarding Palin that was negative last night was what I said above - that she did nothing to stop the "racial and hate and death threats" aimed at Obama that were prevalent at her rallies over the last ten days. She not only did nothing to stop them, she fanned the flames with her "distorting the facts" in her attacks against Obama. Only thing missing from her rallies were KKK robes and torches. McCain wanted an apology from Obama regarding Senator Lewis's remarks, he needs to go get that apology from Senator Lewis who had commented on his own after seeing clips of those rallies. Mr. Lewis has since issued a statement saying his statement(to paraphrase) was an over-reaction but he was still concerned with the racist/fear mongering tenor of the McCain/Palin campaign rallies. So Obama, even in the debate tried to shift the debate back to the issues, saying "we can debate this back and forth and we are going to agree to disagree....., but that is not going to solve the problems of the people who are suffering in this economy, and the health care, ect.." It is McCain, who is obsessed with wanting to maintain a negative campaign, not Obama!! That was made Crystal clear last night!! Also read between the lines on McCain as well, in discussing the small business and Joe the Plumber and the taxes, he is fixated on a guy that will make more than $250K, he completely dismisses any conversation of the under $200k earners, the true middle class - The $40-$140k with 2 income households don't exist in his eyes.
I do think Obama can have a graduating scale with small business owners making $250-$500k just have a very slight increase under his plan as they are likely to get caught in the cracks under his plan. Over $500k - $999K a little larger increase - those over $1 million-4.9 million would be on the next scale and so on! In other words,I don't believe it would be fair for a small business making $260k a year to pay the same tax rate as a business make $2.3 million per year. I think Obama's tax plan would need some modifications in this regard.

I thought McCain's facial expressions showed his lack of control, fanaticism and contempt while Obama showed a steady and intelligent response to all of McCains attacks. Winner: Obama.

I was surprised that no one commented on how rude McCain was to Gov. Obama. Not only did McCain interrupt Mr. Obama several times but he continued to roll his eyes and make faces through out the debate. I found that extremely rude and unprofessional. Mr. Obama did not do that to McCain. Mr. Obama is CLEARLY the better candidate not only for his logical plans for our country but for his calm, cool, and collected demeanor. Sen. McCain came off angry, rude and flustered! Go Obama!!

For me, neither candidate won. I'd call it a draw, again. I doubt if last night changed anyone's vote.

Was it more entertaining? Yes, indeed, because of the split screen. We could see both candidate's reactions to each other's statements. The desk gave them an even playing field. Forcing them to look at each other. Best format of the three.

Obama/Biden '08

Here was something that bothered me:

Sen. McCain was giving examples and cited a few sources, the last being President Kennedy, which I thought was purposeful and unnecessary. The moment made me squirm, and brought out a feeling of protectiveness for Sen. Obama.

Wish I had time to quote the statement. Will do so later tonight.

There are several very interesting articles over at the Huffington Post.

"McCain Transition Chief Aided Saddam In Lobbying Effort"

"Todd Palin's Past Political Associations A Likely Security Clearance Disqualifier"

"Bush-Supporter Dennis Hopper Switches His Vote: "I Pray Obama Wins""

And then you got to read all the information on the Republlican Plant 'Joe the Plumber' - who apparently has NO LICENSE FOR PLUMBING!

Here's some interesting inforrmation on joe the plumber"...
He's not only lived in Mesa and Tucson Arizona in the past, but....North Pole, Alaska!!! Coincidence, or suspicious??? You decide!!!

The following is from The Huffington Post (thank you No Mama for the site)

Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse

by Lawrence O'Donnell

When Colin Powell turns off his TV after the final presidential debate, he will have learned everything he is going to learn about the candidates vying to succeed his former boss, George W. Bush. Powell has made it clear that he has been thinking about an endorsement for a long time but wanted to hear more from the candidates before making his choice. It now seems beyond doubt that Colin Powell will endorse Barack Obama and thereby hammer the final nail in the coffin of the Republican campaign to hold onto the White House.

The recent ugliness of the McCain-Palin rally audiences cannot be lost on Colin Powell. And Powell is not one to ignore a 14 point lead in a New York Times poll. But most important for Powell and the press will be his explicit rejection of the Bush-McCain approach to Iraq, Iran and the rest of the world.

Powell's endorsement will be perfectly timed to dominate a news cycle or two. It will give Obama the one thing he still needs more of--credibility as Commander-In-Chief. And Sarah Palin's speechwriters will be hard pressed to come up with a condescending quip about it.

I agree that Obama won this round, just as he clearly won the other two past debates.

As a very experienced (over 15 years) working professional fraudulent claims examiner and litigation expert, I have seen similar attitudes, body language, and verbal "attack, attack" patterns by people (Mr McCain last night, and Mz. Palin in her thinly concealed frequent SMEAR tactics)-who are on the defensive and who are desperate to try and make their opponents look bad, so that they will somehow seem less bad by comparison. It never works--and usually it just angers the listener even further, and last night it did the latter.

Mr McCain's attitude was clear in his body language, he turned away from Mr. Obama frequently and "rolled his eyes", laughed inappropriately and at inappropriate times, his eyes clearly showed that he thought nothing of what Mr. Obama was trying to put forth as the most important agenda - the Economy - was even worthy of reasonable attention... and his verbal attacks came off as desperation and condensation towards someone he very clearly feels is not worthy of his respect either as a fellow politician or even human being.

I was ashamed to even listen to Mr. McCain when he brought out his most recent SMEAR attempt trying to link a decent politician with Bill Ayers, simply to smear his name and by comparison try to make himself look good. Mr. Obama had no political contacts very obviously with Mr. Ayers, and yet Mr. McCain most certainly had PLENTY of contacts with the Keating Five people - a consortium that nearly destroyed the Economy previously, and which Mr. McCain is desperate to try and get the public to forget.

Mr Obama is the professional, clear-headed, issues-oriented type of man we clearly need in Washington. I think he'll get in, clean house, and if he's smart - investigate every type of fraudulent hidden money scheme and dishonest politically induced agenda from the Bush Administration that he has been perpetrating on the American public since 9-11, using it as an excuse to rip off the Economy, ship jobs oversea's, and bankrupt the American People both monetarily and from other Nation's whose Economies were linked so trustingly to ours. Mr. Bush's political and monetary agenda's have cost us many friends Oversea's, and Mr. McCain's policies already show we would lose even more.

It's time for a Change -and Mr. Obama -- I was an Independent Voter until last night, and last night I became a Democrat and registered to vote as one.

McCain won.

But, will it be enough to make up his deficit? Will it make a difference with the undecideds? Who can still be undecided at this point? The choices could never be more distinct.

True, McCain supporters heard some issues addressed and Obama supporters heard more of what they already like.

Yet, McCain was able to differentiate between his capitalisic proposals and Obama's socialsitic ideas for solving our problems. Re-distribution of wealth scares me. What wealth are we talking about? The monies from the declining stock market? Borrowing from the greedy who profited from the sub-prime debacle? From taxing the top 5% more? Will Obama's financial advisor Mr. Buffet help pay for all our problems? In any case, leave my tax dollars alone already.

I'm glad Obama found so much humor in McCain's talking points. I saw a lot of smirking and smiles on the left side of my split screen. I guess he was just in so much disbelief that someone questioned his past associations. Adding to his list of people and groups that he claims "wasn't the same as when I dealt with..." claim. Some responsibilty Mr. Obama. There is video of you saying you will allow groups like ACORN to help shape the policies of your administration. You know, the same one that you have accepted money from...

I saw a politician who although held back some and showed some restraint was clearly frustrated and bothered. Unfortunately, Obama "looks better" on t.v. and that overshadows much of his message.

I will be voting for capitalism on Tuesday, November 4th - Not Obama and his socialistic proposals.

Mike - My dear friend - I saw the repeat of the debate after coming home from the depressing last game of the season last night.

I guess you are going to see a debate with the eyes and ears with wchich you view the world and the candidates. However: listening to the independents give their views, it looks like Obama wins again on most cards! Most of the independents said McCain started out real well but then lost momentum when he got sidetracked with going on personal attacks and not focusing on issues. Then he started rolling the eyes, getting angry, interrupting Obama on several occasions. It was Obama who looked cool, yeah he laughed sometimes because some of McCain's later arguments were so off the beaten path, it was not even making sense! McCain's last half hour my friend was much like the Dodgers since the 8th inning Monday night through last night - A Big Thud after some promising moments! I saw Obama trying to steer the questions back to the issues from the negative campaign question and McCain bringing the issue back to negative campaigning, so who is the one more obsessed with being negative, Mike? Obama could have gone after Palin like Stairs went after that Broxton fastball Monday night, but he did not.
