Election Overview from *way* Down Under
1:42 AM October 24, 2008
Friday Evening 9:30 p.m.
Auckland International Airport
Once the election is over, I, for one, will really miss all of the coverage. I am not addicted to any particular coverage of sports; but this election is like the Super Bowl, World Series and NBA Finals all rolled into one. You may well feel the same way, or you may simply be tired of the day to day, hour to hour coverage of the candidates.
If I share the considerable interest of, for the sake of argument, the average American; well my interest and my knowledge about the upcoming Presidential race pales, pales in comparison to that of the average New Zealander. That's right, virtually every single person I have met during the past week in Auckland and elsewhere has one thought on their mind, just one. Our U.S. Presidential Election.
Maybe the very best lesson of international travel is the chance to re-learn what every American should already know. World-wide, no other country generates the interest that we do. In 2008 I have been very lucky. I have broadcast from Egypt, England, Italy and this week, New Zealand. And everywhere I go; people are interested and enthusiastic about any and all things American. Especially our election. The local news here covers it. CNN is truly everywhere, and even CNN International spends more time on it than any other story. Last Saturday's meeting of Sarah Palin and Tina Fey, made the front page of the paper here; and I have not heard a single radio newscast all week long, where the American Election isn't the first or second story.
By the way, did I mention that New Zealand is in the middle of a huge national election. The people here will elect a new prime minister, or keep the current one; in a national vote in about two weeks time. But even the race here does not generate the interest that our election, some 6,000 miles away does.
Some say, especially given current economic conditions, that the age of American Influence is over. The so-called "American Century" is done. Don't you believe it. People here and everywhere actually root for us. Most people I have talked to have expressed a very specific preference, but no matter whom they support, the international American political "fans" I have met still believe that the United States is the beacon of the free world. And that we can do better, and that we must do better. Because their fates; in Cairo, London, Rome and Auckland are all tied to our fate.
It is a great privilege and fantastic education to be able to travel abroad. It is also, I don't know how else to put it, an honor, that so many people in so many places are so vested in who will occupy the White House in January of 2009.
One thing is absolutely clear to me. The World, really IS watching.

Sam,
Unfortunately no one can find your recent blog. After several requests to various anchors, it seems to still fall on deaf ears as far as the webmaster correcting the blog website.
You see the only way we can find the latest blogs is to click on the individual icons and then that brings up the latest blogs. Unfortunately just going to http://blogs.ktla.com doesn't show the latest blogs.
This problem has been ever since they changed the paging format to where you have to click on "previous" or "next" to get to a past or next page. It's a real pain in the you know what.
Can't someone there fix this problem? It's really annoying. You know how the viewership dropped due to the "change" in format on March 17th. My God, if you lose us here on the blogging page, you might as well add KTLA Morning Show to the list of those dropped along the wayside... I've never seen such incompetence other than that of this present administration, in my entire life!!! Come on Sam, can't you get some heat behind the person responsible for this change???

Hi Sam ...
I would like to comment on your posting... I travelled over Europe and parts of the Middle East in the 1970's, lived in Europe for several years in the USAF in the mid 70's during the Cold War, traveled around the USA as well by car and occasional trips by air and train, and for the past 10 years mostly traveled by Armchair Method on the Internet -- through web cam's with people in internet cafe's in likely and unlikely places, world-wide elsewhere and here in the USA as well.
One thing I have found in all those days and meetings was that people are the same the world over, they all want freedom of expression, freedom to live their lives according to their needs, desires and dreams, and they look to America as an Ideal, the place they would all love to visit, some to move here and live with us, some to just admire our way's of "being there" when we're needed.
America is thought of
as a vigilant big brother, someone who is there to watch out for you... someone who won't steer you wrong, someone who ... cares.
People in other countries put their trust in us, and followed our example. Many of their economies became based on ours and now many of them are suffering because of some very greedy anti-American's who got into office and trashed our image and our lives... if it were possible to impeach a President after he left office, this would be the time... let's not put another "cronie" in office... it's time for Change, time to bring back our self respect.
Yes we need controls on our Economy, we need Someone who can't be "bought" by Big Business, because the old adage about "Power Corrupts, and Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely" is correct. Some parts of Big Business have been corrupt, and they spread that corruption into the very area's we as American's and as members of the Global Community expected to remain "clean and impartial" - our Government.
It's long been said by News Reporting Agencies and the Media that we need to clean up Washington. That we need to put a complete stop to politicians who take money in any form - trips, gifts, cash for campaigns, clothes, homes, stock options, etc. and "clean house". I think we've reached that time now...
It won't be easy ... corruption is deeply seated... but it's been recognized since 1939 ("Mr. Smith goes to Washington", Jimmy Stewart, actor) that this needs to be done. Watching that film will tell you a lot about how our country is run, and how much we have to change it. It's been nearly 60 years since that film came out... and we're still letting politician's like villains in that picture run the country. We hadn't learned until the Economy crashed a second time... just how badly they've been running it.
So, yes, it's time for a change... time for American's who believe in us - in an America that other countries and people's look up to, an America we want to leave for our children and our grand-children, to stand up for Change ...
I mentioned that I am on the Internet a lot talking to others around the world -and Mr. Rubin - you're entirely correct - the World is Waiting, Watching, Hoping that we do the right thing and change our government for the better.. hoping that we can be again that Ideal that search for - that comfortable Hand on the shoulder of Reason ..

Sam, No Mama Palin is right. I stopped coming to the Morning News site when Frank Buckley moved to his own page. Improved navigation needed pronto!
Don't know what possessed me to look today. Must have been your karma.
Glad I happened by because your post nearly brought me to tears.
We, Americans, think we're an island. Just doing our own thing - picking a new president. A chore we perform every 4 years. I'd forgotten about CNN's international audience and never would have known the degree of their interest. I watch CNN obsessively because the discussions and debates are so fascinating, plus I have to keep up for the threads here. I don't think about my counterparts in New Zealand, or Egypt, or Britain who're just as intrigued by the views of Micheal Moore, Christopher Hitchens, Colin Powell, and our American plight.
Thanks for the reminder.
And, BRAVO, MCT in Silverlake, for your insightful words.

Sam, they need to put little pictures of the anchors that are going to be blogging from this particular section. There's no way to know to click on that particular icon to find you. Come on Sam, this new format IS as bad as the change made at KTLA...don't let the blogs go in that direction, I'm begging you. Also, pages need to be numbered at the other more popular blogs, because it's a pain in the ass to have to keep clicking on next. I guess you being "down under" you don't have much control over any of this until you get back, but please work on it pronto...I'm sure you remember how fast we left the 9 AM segment!

Sam,
I watch you this morning making comments about Gov. Sarah Palin not knowing Jimmy Choo's shoes (did I spell his last name correctly)?
How shallow can your wife be! To base her voting decision on whether the candidate is a 5th Ave. shopper is dumb, stupid and narrow-minded.
That is such an insult and an ellitist comment to regular people who has other priorities in life than knowing who the designers are that people like your wife adore and think is the best thing that ever happened to mankind. A $1000 on a pair of shoes! If this is her criteria then she should vote for Paris Hilton for president.
By the way, does your wife wake up every morning whether she likes it or not to go to work to earn a living and make decisions that affect people's lives? Or does she look forward waking up every morning to find out the latest trend in fashion? and planning your next vacation spot?

Your story about how New Zealand and the other parts of the world watch our election should make everyone sit up and take notice. They are waiting to see if we are going to keep doing business as usual and continue the economic and foreign policies that have seen our stature and credibility in the world go down, or are they going to see us break new ground and progress as a nation. With many other nations watching, electing Obama would be a sign that we are not going to try and go it alone and be the stubborn "old whitey imperialist" again with an "our way or the highway" mentality of diplomacy. Maybe having a leader that looks more like other nation's leaders around the world would make some of these countries less hostile and willing to negotiate for peace. My minister once said, " I'd rather live with hope and be wrong then live without hope and be right." The hope that keeps me going is that our nation and our world can be a better place and Barack is young enough and has the energy and a plan to try and make it better. McCain is yesteryear with no real vision of tomorrow and no hope for me of a better nation or world as their campaign has provided none, just negative campaigning about Obama.

Sam,
Thanks for sharing with us what's going on right now in Europein regard to our election. It's interesting to hear that we are not alone in our obsession to see this “change” occur!
I recently spoke at length with a friend of mine, who recently moved here from Israel. She has just became a US citizen, and is anxious to vote in her US election. However she was lead to believe by McCain and Lieberman that McCain would be better to protect Israel.
It took some time for me to convince her that Obama would be better in dealing with many other countries, including Israel. But I did!
I do believe that Obama may be able to possibly accomplish more in his negotiations with other world powers, Because of his intelligence, and because he IS different than the status Quo typical US leader.
I am looking forward to Nov 4. I hope very much that Barrack Obama becomes our new president!
Bar-rack the vote!

She is doing an excellent job on her new show!
Apparently Obama agrees!

I am wondering why you haven't reported about the 2001 speech Obama gave where he makes reference to "redistribution of wealth" - which by the way is "socialism". This is something he has been working on for 7 years and he tired to sell this bill of goods to Joe the Plumber. You know - the Soviet Union failed - I guess Obama has a better idea. After all - that is why all of us here in America go to work everday - to support our own family and any others that Obama wants to assign to us. You know he supports another stimulus package which includes giving people a rebate even if they didn't pay taxes. That's not a rebate - that's welfare.
I am an educated man with a wife and 2 college kids. I make a ok living but I do not consider myself rich. But even with what I make - I still have to budget. How am I supposed to take care of others (you know socialism)?
You all basically have shown who you are supporting by the way you report these political stories. It is ashame that you haven't presented both men in the same equal light for people to make a good decision instead of your biased reporting. Of course - I happen to live in a state of radicals and far left liberals that don't look at what is right but what the Democrats want.
God forbid we have to count on Obama protecting this country from radicals and terrorists. Instead of shooting he probably thinks he can talk them to death.
We live in tough times right now and we need someone tough to get us thru it - we don't need a guy with fancy speeches and no substance! At least I will be able to sleep well at night knowing John McCain isn't afraid of these terrorists.
Posted by: Tony | October 28, 2008 at 11:54 PM
Yes, Tony, he will keep us at war for another 4-8 years where we are not needed draining our economics even further. We will be further plunged into economic depression the likes of which will make the 30's look like a mere blip on the screen!
He is so yesteryear and so about the rich that own houses,ect.. He doesn't really know about the middle class! He hasn't yet come up with a feasible plan that I have heard that will work that is not the same "trickle down crap" that hasn't worked the last 8 years. The gap between the rich and the middle class is widening, so much so that the middle class will be become the lower class and poor under McCain's administration!! He is protecting his own friends and buddies in big corporations!! I'm surprised you can't see their desperation, their wild attempts to discredit their opponent, young girls making up stories of being assaulted by black people to vote for Obama, ACORN accusations that were proven not meritous yet the GOP was illegally purging legitimate voters off lists and slamming voters into the GOP illegally all the while. The Bill Ayres bandwagon they rode - while VP Palin's hubby is a member of a party in Alaska that wants to secede from the US and hates America's institutions and the VP shares their visions. Then this VP says people like me that moved to the cities to look for work and live honestly are not "real americans" like people who chose to live in small towns. I guess the NYC firefighters who gave their lives to save people from the buring towers on 9/11 are't "real americans" either-according to her!
Finally a candidate wants to give the middle class a break and the rich and powerful scream "socialism"! Well the big bailout was socialism to the banks and AIG- we as taxpayers just got saddled with Wall Street's baggage. Barack just wants to give Main Street back some of what Wall Street "stole" from us!! I say "we deserve a break" like that Old McDonalds commercial slogan said.
Posted by: Craig | October 29, 2008 at 09:44 AM
War is not the only to handle enemies Yes we should talk first. War should only be entered as a last resort. McCain is too hot headed to run our country. Providing John McCain lives long enough to pull the trigger, but not to worry Sarah's a pretty good shot herself! But Oh I guess a good brain to deal with the problems that the last republican left by give tax breaks to rich, forget about the rest ...kind of president... that same program this republican president...will be.
This country is a democracy. Why do republicans feel that it must me ran by republicans ...indefinitely? They have had 8 years and our country as NEVER been in worst shape!!
It is time for a change a real change..and yes new blood not the same OLD political machine that has dominated this country for far to long.
And as far as your dislike of California that is so liberal as you put it. I guess you must think that Schwarzenegger your republican governor is not in charge? Yes he is! And I might add another financial mess that a Republican has gotten us into! And as soon as we can we are going to get rid of him too!
But before you get to depressed about the man that will most likely become our president...and since you don't like it here where us Californians believe that Green energy is a real possibility. And that all our shores and coastlines should be free of cancer spewing oil rigs.
Well there is a another solution for you. Alaska! It was beautiful and natural and had beautiful creatures like wolves and Polar bears running free on it's terrain...but it has a republican governor, Palin.
If we are lucky...but sadly not so lucky for Alaska soon... Palin's only job after Nov 4. Will be to go back there and concentrate on destroying the Ozone layer ...the same Ozone layer, that she doesn't believe in. She can drill baby drill to her hearts content. She can continue to shoot helpless creatures, she can rape the land for oil instead of use modern technology to create green oil energy...and while she is drilling all over Alaska ....and when she gets to the layer of earth that has not defrosted since dinosaurs, and if she happens to find any dinosaurs she will probably just burn them for FOSSIL fuel!!! Since she doesn't believe in them! Anyway.... Right?
Oh yeah McCain and Palin in your opinion is just what this 21 century world of ours needs right? NOT!!!
Hopefully the majority of Americans believe like me ... that it's time for real change.

Problem is, if the GOP wins this time - we might never get it away from them and we will be a one party dictatorship! They will enact further laws making it harder to register to vote - infringing on the 14th amendment more than they already have with the laws they enacted with the help of Abramoff and Co. I'm already cynical of whether this election will be genuine this year. Purge lists, catching the GOP guy slamming unsuspecting petitioners into becoming GOP party members, touch screens in Virginia with the "Glitch" favoring McCain, other dirty tricks & intimidation tactics already being tried on college students in battleground states. This election is not a foreground conclusion, my Demo friends! I fear this one can be stolen from us as well! I'm hoping for the best and bracing for the worst!

To all Obama supporters,
Did you see the look on McCain's face when Joe pulled a no show at the rally in Penn. yesterday?
It just looked like McCain was angry..like his employee had just screwed up!
But hey ...what am I saying Mc scary always looks angry ...just like he is about to push that red button on his desk in the Oval office...the one that triggers the nukes!!
No! John Don't !!
OMG!
Whew!! ...sorry that was just my Halloween nightmare!
Let's not make every night a Halloween nightmare after Nov 4.
Vote for Barrack Obama ...so sweet, safe dreams, can return nightly ...AFTER Barrack is elected!
Happy Halloween!
Bar-rack the vote!

I've been talking with friends in Canada who like what they see in Sen. Obama. He's run a fantastic campaign - organized and focused.
Their advice to us - Don't screw it up! Be sure Obama wins.

wwjd - Jesus would not condemn and discriminate against people his Holy Father created. Look at the Gospels, Jesus did not speak word one in any of his teachings on homosexuality as a "high moral sin to be condemned". There is no mention of it at all, yet there were many of his speeches against hypocrisy and fake piousness among the "so called religious leaders" of Jesus's day. His parables and metaphors and allagories are full of shots at the religious establishment, (The Pharisees and Sadducees). Jesus was always quick to point out the love, unbounded faith and gratitude of foreigners and people considered outcasts
by society. The unclean lady that touched his garment, the one leper of ten that returned to praise him that was a Samarian, the Roman centurion who believed Jesus healed his son and said I don't have to go right away because I know if you said so, it is true. So WWJD - he would say to those that brought this proposition on the ballot - "Don't point out the fleck of dust in your brother's eye when you have a plank in your own eye."
