Recently, electronic highway signs were hacked in Florida to read "NO LATINOS" and "NO TACOS."  To show our support for tacos (my favorite food besides large burgers) here are some photos of tacos....lots and lots of tacos.  In fact, I think I'll be eating tacos today.

However, apparently the jury is still out.  Is this flat out discrimination?  Or a warning?

An excerpt from the Huntington Post:

'Reactions to the "No Latinos no tacos" sign have been mixed. One user, @MikeRiggs, tweeted, "I think "No Latinos"/"No Tacos" road sign is pro-immigration... w/o Latinos, you don't get tacos!" Another, @Emmalerner87, called the road signs an instance of discrimination, tweeting in Spanish, "No Tacos No Latinos = Discriminacion."'

In either case there is no room for discrimination in this day and age and quite frankly, tacos are an integral part of our lives.

The whole spread.

Don't let the unassuming locale and look fool you, this place is legit.  The cheapest, tastiest, juiciest meats you will ever eat in West LA.  I guarantee this Persian Kosher market will blow your mind.  Large quantities of meat plus plenty of tomatoes, lavish bread, ground sumac, and fresh basil with your order.  If you want rice, they give you alot.  Plus if you are into various Persian stews, this is the place.  I've never ordered any of the raw meats; but they have everything there seasoned and fresh.  I'm not too sure of the hours.  I'd just call ahead and see if they're open before trekking out.  But you will not be disappointed.

Shepard's Pie

When I'm in the valley and I have a craving for a good British Pub setting, I go to Robin Hood.  The service is decent and friendly; although I've only sat in the bar section; not the seating section.  I almost always go for the fish and chips anytime I'm in a pub and these are pretty delicious.  Light, fluffy.. a little greasy but it's fish and chips; what do you expect?  The fries are ok; although the last time I was here the fries were fresh and tasted great.  I don't really venture too far off the menu, I've had the shepard's pie which is good and some appetizers which were OK.  Of course, I'm always up for a decent pint and this place has a good beer selection on tap and in bottles.  I'm usually there late; maybe close to 1030pm or 11pm; I've always been able to order food but I don't exactly know when the kitchen cutoff is or when they close.  It's definitely a good choice if you are in the area.  Check it out.

The Chicken Doner.

Spitz... home of the Donor Kebab.  Apparently influenced by Kebab found in Spain; these are probably the smallest 7 dollar kebab wraps you will find in this city.  Very small and light with just one thin slice of meat.  The fries were piled with everything possible but had a great flavor.  The key to this place is the happy hour.  Quality beers on tap for very cheap and 3 dollar drafts on the weekends.  I wish there was more meat in the wraps, but it was good nonetheless.  I'll probably go back for the happy hour and the fries.  Maybe try the classic Kebab with lamb next time.  If you like beer and happy hour, this is a good spot.

Dine with Antonio if you'd like.

Cha Cha Cha.. Caribbean style eating.  I've been going here for years and on this particular day I tried a couple new things on the menu (for me at least).  They are most known for their Jamaican Jerk Chicken but the Grilled Veggie Sandwich was pretty good and the Jerk Pork was excellent.  The Calamari came out fresh and hot and was very good.  Of course they have a nice selection of beers and their sangria is highly recommended.  Dining next to Antonio is a little weird but that's what gives this place charm; the interior decor and the overall atmosphere of the place is very laid back with alot to look at.  Parking might be a challenge; I was lucky to find a spot on the street but they do have valet parking.

Okonomiyaki

This place isn't everyone's favorite but it's a favorite of mine.  The service can be a bit slow when it's crowded, but they let you order drinks while you wait.  That's a plus for me.  The concept is easy, small plates, booze some grilled items, some specialty items.  The three above is just a sample of what I like to order.  One of the few places (I could be wrong) in LA that serves Okonomiyaki; which I guess roughly translates to "whatever you like" etc.  Basically a Japanese style pancake with seafood and meat.  It's delicious.  Another one of my favorites is the whole grilled squid.  Love it.  Goes great with beer.  And of course they have a handful of rolls and sushi you can order but the rolls tend to be kind of small.  If you go, I suggest a weeknight and a little later; like 830/9pm.  Little Tokyo is open late most of the restaurants are open past midnight so no worries about getting stranded if you roll out and they are closed for whatever reason.  Not saying they will be, but just vouching for the trip to DTLA in general. ;)  Happy eating!

The pictures ain't pretty but I was in a flurry of cooking and eating to worry about picture perfect flicks of meat.  This place is no AYCE (All You Can Eat) but the price is reasonable and you get large amounts per order which is about 20 or less per order split between however many people you have in your party.  A couple things, they do charge for rice and lettuce (like a dollar or so) but if you prefer to just go all meat, you get seasoned green onions for free plus all the usual Korean suspects; kimchee, various dipping mechanisms, maybe some bean sprouts and other vegetables to balance out the all meat diet.  It is also imperative to ask for garlic, jalapenos and fermented soy bean paste (deng-jang).  They won't give it to you automatically and it adds some kick to your meal.  That is of course, if you ain't afraid of the garlic smell.  And this is Koreatown, so the service will be random.  They are nice but they will try to force the issue with putting tons of meat down on your grill.  I prefer to do my own cooking at my own pace so just tell them to stop or that you'll take care of it.  The heat control is under the table and isn't that hard to figure out.  This is probably the best non-AYCE place I go to simply because the meat is always fresh with alot of flavor.  Plus not all the meat options are marinated in the kalbi/bulgogi traditional way.  Some are un-marinated (which I love) so have fun!  P.S.  If they have chicken, and you are afraid of cooking raw chicken at your table don't order it.

First let me say off the bat that when I go get a burger, Islands is not really at the top of my list.  They do however serve big beers and have a nice selection of drinks; so by default if I want a drink and there's nothing around I'll drop in.  Of course, everyone knows their cheese fries which are big enough for 6 people and at a good price.  I like those, a little salty but good.  I haven't been in an Islands in over 5 years so the things I noticed were whole wheat buns and turkey/veggie options.  I tried out the turkey which is preseasoned, not like a fresh patty they season on the grill.  It was decent, not the best I've had but decent.  The burgers definitely look delicious but maybe there are too many flavor compositions competing for attention?  In the end you get a decent burger a large beer and some sides for an OK price.

A closer look.

Wow, this place is really good.  And if you want to check it out before you go, I'm sure there's a Food Network clip floating around somewhere online.  These aren't your typical "deli" sandwiches; or sandwiches in general.  I feel these have a pretty unique flavor on it's own.  The BBQ Pulled Pork is very sweet, rich and tender.  Not too heavy on the seasoning; just the right amount.  The Oinster Pastrami with Gruyere cheese, caramelized onion and red cabbage slaw is just off the hook.  Seriously, that's some good Pastrami and I've had a few sandwiches in my time.  The added bonus?  Great beers in bottles and on tap.  Of course I had to go with the Arrogant Bastard pitcher.  And the Belgian fries were really crispy and delicious.  If you are not familiar with Eagle Rock, take 15 minutes and drive out.  There are some great places like this one all around.
