The Ultimate "Adventure in Moving"

House1 Some things are do-it-yourself jobs, others aren't.

Moving your house on the freeway from one location to another definitely falls into the latter category.

A man named Patrick Richardson found that out the hard way.

He got a permit from Caltrans to tow his two-bedroom home from Santa Monica to Santa Clarita.   According to the CHP, his authorized route should have taken him north on the 405 freeway.

Well, he didn't take the authorized route.  Instead he drove downtown and then turned north on the 101.

That's when the problems started.

First, he lost several wheels from the trailer.House2   Then the roof of the house slammed into an overpass at Western Avenue.

Finally, he just pulled over on the northbound 101 just north of Barham Blvd.   And his house has been there ever since.  For 9 days!

It's parked on the shoulder of the freeway.  Taggers have marked it up on all four sides.  Some joker even put a "For Rent" sign on the back of it.

Now, Caltrans is looking for a temporary location... so they can remove it from the freeway and store it somewhere.

Patrick, if you're reading this, I know you wanted to save a buck or two during the move.  But navigating a full-size house through the L.A. freeway system DOES take some skill.

Can you hire a professional next time, please?

Get this troublesome eyesore off the freeway! This green monster was first spotted stalled on the 101 at Silverlake on Saturday morning. Caused traffic havoc on all adjacent city streets, since the CHP had to re-route traffic off the 101, onto all the closest offramps. I first saw the torn off, damaged roof of this house at around 1:45 PM Saturday afternoon, as I was entering the 101 on the Hollywood Blvd onramp. As I was heading back into LA on the southbound 101, I saw this house again. This time, it had come to its final stop on the shoulder of the Fwy in the Cahuenga Pass, off of Barham. This surreal sight could be seen by every gawking motorist that passed by. The house isn't only embarassing to look at, but it's a serious safety hazard as well. Tow it away, break it up and burn it, then present the full bill of this expense to the idiot owner/mover of this house!
