Possible Rape on Campus Raises Questions
11:19 AM December 11, 2007
(USC) -- For once, we're covering a story about USC and it has nothing to do with football.
Early this morning a female student was found lying on the ground in a classroom here. She was unconscious and half naked. And police think she might have been raped.
Detectives were trying to interview her at the hospital to learn her version of what happened.
The woman was found in the basement of the Social Sciences building at 3:30 AM by another student. The cops say she was discovered in a room adjacent to a computer lab. The hall is open 24 hours a day so that students can prepare for finals.
I asked campus police various questions. Is there any supervision by staff in these campus buildings that are open all night long? Is there any security necessary to get in? Do you need a cardkey to gain access to the room? They didn't have many answers.
However, the USC police defended their efforts to keep the campus secure. They say they're doing a better job keeping the university safe. Violent crime, they say is down 22% this year. If this was a rape, they say, it would be the first one reported on campus in 2007.
Still, everybody know USC is an urban campus in a neighborhood with a reputation. Students, especially women students, say they take precautions.
One of them told me she never walks unaccompanied after dark. "It just wouldn't be a good idea," she explained.
***UPDATE: Campus officials now say the woman was NOT raped... She was just intoxicated.
