Where Do You Dine After 11PM In This Town?
10:52 AM December 6, 2007
True story: Went out with my wife to see a late movie on a Saturday night. It ended around 10:45 PM, and we couldn't find a place to have dinner.
Now, I'm a morning guy. It's rare that I stay up late. But on weekends, you try to act like a normal human being.
And is it so crazy to believe, in a city as large as Los Angeles, that you ought to be able to find a decent restaurant that's still serving food until midnight? Apparently it is.
We drove around the Westside for quite some time, and we kept seeing "closed" signs at our favorite places.
Finally, we ended up at Chaya in Venice. A sign outside advertised "late supper". And when we sat down, we found that they actually have a happy hour that begins at 11PM! Imagine that -- catering to those who want to have a meal late at night. Final tab was $35 for two, with drinks.
At any rate, am I the only person who has run into this problem? I know there are plenty of fast food and chain restaurants that do keep later hours. But is that all there is?
Send me your late-night restaurant selections, and we'll post them here for everyone's benefit.

Ha! I've lived in the Valley, Pasadena and Simi Valley. They roll up the streets at night, Eric! I've found the only pitiful entries for late night cuisine are Denny's, Twains and 7-11. Oy.

As a native Southern Californian, I feel your pain and discontent. May I recommend The Kettle in Manhattan Beach. It has a pretty extensive menu and if you can survive some parking agitation, this is a great late night destination.
