Notes on Opening Day

10:05 AM  March 31, 2008

Dodger I won't be in that sellout crowd at Dodger Stadium today, and it's not because I don't love baseball.

It's just that getting there is such a chore.

I don't care how you plan it, how early you arrive, which entrance you choose, it doesn't seem to matter.  You will end up waiting in your car for a long time, both coming and going.

Every year the Dodgers promise things will be different.  This year, the team is adding parking spaces (What is it now, $15 bucks to park there?).  They've installed cameras to monitor the gridlock.  They're coordinating with KFWB to provide better traffic reports.

Good luck!

I'll see a Dodgers game on a weekday when they're playing a lousy team and traffic is lighter.  Or I'll go to Anaheim.  Even if the drive to get there is longer, it's always easier to get in and out of an Angels' game because of its proximity to freeways.  Dodger Stadium is isolated by comparison.  There are three or four ways to get access to Chavez Ravine, and that's it.

But my favorite place to see baseball would be any minor-league park.

I have fond memories of going to Las Vegas Stars games when I lived there in the 80's.   You'd sit close to the action, and there would only be 6,000 people there.  No fighting to get in.  No waiting for a hot dog and a beer.  And it was affordable, too.  We didn't care that the temperature was 106 degrees.

Another great place to see a game is in Portland, Maine.  If you ever find yourself there in the summer, check out a Sea Dogs game.   You will sit in the wooden stands with a few hundred cheering fans, and you'll be reminded about what the experience of watching a ball game used to be, many years ago.

Ah yes, I miss going to Dodgers' games. I remember in the 80's, my friend's dad had great season tickets (4th row behind home plate), I dated players that couldn't get me that great of seats! We had season parking, basically you could pull up and park next to the gate. I could leave OC and make it in time for some batting practice on a weeknight! Angele stadium is nice, but it lacks to warmth and history of Dodgers' stadium. Oh well, at least I have the memories.

Hi Eric..it IS all in the timing. as long as you know where your seats are then no problem. Lets see, you probably sit in field Boxes so enter the Academy entrance, and park in General Admission which is behind the pavilions (bleachers) then just walk across the street and you are there! We took in batting practice right on the warning track between the pavilions, and Lee Lacy was there giving autographs! For the seven ten game we got there when the Stadium gates open (inside)at 540 then we just take our time, get our food (no lines) eat in peace (no one climbing over us), and relax and enjoy the evening. We always wait until the end of the game, and enjoy the hightlights which other stadiums don't show, and mosey our way on out...no problems. We've done this throughout the years when our four kids where little til now (they are in their late 20's) it's just our traditon. Angel Stadium is ok, but they aren't our Dodgers. Contact me if you want to try a game our way :)
It sure beats taking that darn Caltrain that Giant fans have to take plus they pay $30 for parking! I know because last season we visited some friends up north and went one game their way and one game our way...totally different experience!!

Eric, I disagree with your parking issues although I realize it agrees for most people. It's timing and route. This may be a mistake, but for a 7:10pm game we leave our house in Porter Ranch roughly at 5:30pm on the 118 to the 210 to the 2 south where it ends on Alverado south to Sunset. A mile up the street is the entrance and at that time, usually about an hour or less to start time. Time to watch practice warm-ups and before game events, get food etc... No pushing or shoving. At that time there is parking everywhere. My wife is handicapped so we park in handicapped, but that doesn't mean much since most of the lots are open. Most people choose to arrive from 6:45 on. We usually leave between the 7th and 8th if they are loosing and exit through the Griffith exit to the 5 and away we go home in a half hour or less while listening to the rest of the game on the radio. Now staples sucks, from the seats on out. I was at a childrens play in Thousand Oaks over the weekend and there was some one in front of us wo lives in LA, but would rather travel to thousand Oaks for the same event, because staples is horrible. Personally I would rather go to The Pond (oh excuse me... The Honda Center) or second choice Mars rather than go to the staples center. Now, if you want to talk food, Dodger Statium is below horrible. In Maryland there is a deck to sit and eat crab and watch the game. Here we get cold over cooked junk at a way too expensive price. I wouldn't mind the money if the food was at least better. The only way to really enjoy the Dodgers at home is from The Stadium Club and the multi star buffet.

Hey Eric,
I love the LA Dodgers...But, I am a die hard Angel Fan!! I say go to the Angel games! The access is so much easier than LA..We have been season ticket holders for awhile..ALWAYS an ANGLES fan..but i will also be cheering for the Dodgers!! Hooray for baseball!!

I have to agree with you Eric. I love baseball. It is just soooo crazy to out, (I don’t mind getting there, just the “hours” it takes to get home). I too love the minor leagues. We have the Lancaster Jethawks out here in Lancaster. Granted, they are not the Dodgers, (although we do play the Dodgers minor league…Inland Empire 66ers).

All of our kids have learned to love baseball because we have this team out here. They have so many signatures on cards, balls etc. It’s pretty neat to see them make their way up to the Majors too.

And talk about change!! We started out as the minor league for Seattle, then went to Arizona, now the Boston…so change doesn’t bother me…when it’s for the good and works.

I'm with you on this one Eric! Los Angeles ANGELS of Anaheim ALL THE WAY! It is much easier to get into and out of Angel games. As happy as I am to see Joe Torre here in LA, I just can't take the traffic. Go ANGELS!!!
