Parents of Murdered Football Star Fight to Change LAPD Policy

10:51 AM  April 8, 2008

The pain doesn't seem to stop for Anita and Jamiel Shaw, Sr.

The whole city grieved when we learned that their 17-year-old son was gunned down last month.  Jamiel, Jr. was a good student and a promising athlete.  He was murdered three doors down from his home in Arlington Heights -- shot to death when asked what gang he was in.

Jamiel, Jr. wasn't in a gang.

Jamiel's parents are still getting letters from colleges that wanted to recruit their son to play football.  Every day, when they pick up the mail, they see more reminders of the horrible pain that will never go away.

They are coping by doing everything they can to make sure this sort of tragedy doesn't happen to other parents.

That means fighting for something called Jamiel's Law.

You see, the known gangbanger who's accused of murdering their son, 19-year-old Pedro Espinosa, was in this country illegally.  He had even been in jail.  But for some reason, the authorities never checked his immigration status... or never informed federal authorities who might have deported him.

And the LAPD has a policy preventing them from arresting people for immigration violations.

The Shaws believe that policy is outrageous -- especially when it comes to gangbangers.  They argue if the cops know that a gang member is an illegal alien, why can't they do something about it?

Jamiel's Law would direct the LAPD to cooperate with federal authorities if cops come across gang criminals who don't have legal papers.

The L.A. city council will hear from the Shaws today... We'll keep you posted on what the response is.

If we need another law, ok. But why do we have to accept any illegal people from below the border here? They cost the American people billions in benefits. Why should an illegal Mexican be able to be here anymore than any person with an expired legal visa? I think the American people need to speak up and take our rights back and not financially support the world.

Its such a tragedy for this fine young man to lose his life, senselessly, and despicable how LA is a Santuary City and Mexico sends all its deviants and criminals here to El Norte, live with protection !!!

Our Candied Assed Politicans should hang their heads in shame for making our city a sewer cesspool for gangs to conregate and enjoy immunity, as well as tax payers benefits all under the guise of "cheap labor".

Our Dog Catcher Mayor Tony Villar-la Raza should be the first deported.

regards

Ray

these people should be deported enough is enough it is worse than any body would think clean the streets up of these gang bangers so our kids can grow up with out fear

Hey Bill,
Must suck to be you

Friends.
I would like to propose a splinter group completely separate from the Ratpack.
The Fist Shakers Support Group of Southern California. (F.S.S.G.) Eric deserves to have his own dedicated support team and the Ratpack is more dedicated to being heard as a collective voice, in our discussion about the 9 am hour.
Eric covers so many topics with such clarity that he is truly deserving of his own support clan. Also, he correctly stated that he is an employee, not a supervisor. As such, he needs support. Not demands being placed upon him.
Who's with me?

Bill, first I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for serving our country. As American citizens we know that the price of freedom is not free and for that I thank you and all the men and women that serve.
As for Ann statistics also say that more than likely she is or has family that have come over illegally. Many argue that this country was built on immigrants and yes that is true to a point (notice illegal) wasn't there.
I was born and raised in this great nation. We have friends that have come here legally, i.e. got their green card.It took time and money but it was so important to them that they sacrificed to get here. When they got here they took all the steps to become American citizens. My in-laws are of Mexican and German descent and they came here legally. My family came here from Ireland legally.
Illegal immigrants are here ILLEGALLY, they broke the law to get here. I have no problem with immigrants coming here as long as they do it within the law.
I work within the community I live and Ann for the most part the ones breaking the law here are Mexican and illegal. The illegals are causing hardship on our hospitals and schools. This I also know for a fact. I have seen it first hand. It might not be this way in your commuity but it is in the "sanctuary cities."
Bill in San Diego you are a great American and I wish that others like you and me spoke out more often and perhaps things would change.
This is one proud AMERCAN.

Ann, I don't have to.
It is neither "kneejerk" or "reactionary". It is the opinion of a Combat Veteran of the Armed Forces. I dedicated a significant portion of my adult life to "...Support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic..." and I vote. Illegal Immigrants are breaking the law. What part of Breaking the law do you not understand?
Statistics tell me that you probably do not vote. Not saying you do or don't vote but outside of a few HOT Topic elections, America is sadly lacking, when it comes to it's citizens excersizing their right to vote. Yours is a typical response from those that disagree with Americans that want illegal immigrants detained and deported. You are not in the majority and on this forum, your voice is not loud enough to drown me out. Rock on sister, Veterans like myself and the hundreds of thousands that came before me, make it possible.

Bill,
Knee jerk reactionary; look that up!

FOR ANN! A dictionary definition of Illegal Immigrant. (Open your mind. Learn, absorb and advance your human standing)...
Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) - Cite This Source - Share This
illegal alien
–noun 1. a foreigner who has entered or resides in a country unlawfully or without the country's authorization.
2. a foreigner who enters the U.S. without an entry or immigrant visa, esp. a person who crosses the border by avoiding inspection or who overstays the period of time allowed as a visitor, tourist, or businessperson. Compare resident alien.

Also called illegal immigrant.

Again, to ANN. We live in a society of laws. Illegal Immigrants are breaking the law. If you don't like the law, work with in the accepted parameters and change the law. Facts are facts. This family lost a son to an illegal immigrant. Had the police determind immigrant status during previous contact, this crime might not have occured. Law abiding citizens have the right to expect law enforcement to enforce all laws, not just the ones that are politically correct. Political Correctness be damned! Break a law, go to jail. Illegal Immigrant? Get the business end of Uncle Sams Boot. It's really that simple.

Why should she have to move? Why not deal w/the problem? Moving away solves nothing... ANY ILLEGAL person should not be given courtesies of any kind when they do these dispicable acts.

Thank you Ann for noting comment from Shelly. I totally agree with the topic but let's not make statements that you are unbale to backup. Sounds like Shelly needs to move out of Montebello and learn to spell also.

It truly is sad that some take advantage of the freedom we have in this great country. I understand where Ann is coming from but these gang-bangers DO NOT deserve any sort of "Constitutional protection." They are out there to kill people (whether another gang banger or an innocent bystander.) People with such hate and cruel intentions should not be protected. People who are going on their daily lives, helping this country be an even better place are those who SHOULD and DESERVE to be protected.

Eric, I watched you do this live and it’s just heartbreaking. I am for this Law 100%. We need to protect our children and ourselves every way we can. It’s getting to the point that you can’t even sit in your house and feel safe, let alone walk down the sidewalk.

We truly need to take back our streets!! God Bless this family. We feel for them and will continue to pray for them.

p.s. I have to agree with Mike. I loved having you with us all last week. You truly are a huge piece of KTLA, but…it is stories like this that you make seem so much more. You have a way of reporting the “human” side and not just the “story”. I too have to agree that you are an awesome Field Reporter!!

I, too feel for the Shaw family, but some of the previous comments posted on this topic are so blatantly ignorant and racist that I feel compelled to respond. Curious, how does Shelly know these people who are breaking the law are mostly Mexican? Does Shelly have some special power that enables her to detect ethnicity simply by glancing at a person? Do you really think that people and I mean "every" person in this country needs to walk around with some form of National Identification stating their citizenship status? Last time I looked we do have the right to privacy, something called oh yeah! Civil liberties and rights, and by the way, immigration is handled on a federal level not a local one. Jamiel's Law though well intended is clearly illegal and if passed will be rightfully ruled unconstitutional!

Like Mike, I saw your interview with the Shaw family this morning also and felt you did a wonderful job helping them through this trying time - 1 hour before they were to appear before the City Council to propose Jamiel's Law.

Mrs. Shaw is correct - the government should have protected her family while she was in Iraq fighting for our freedom. I hope she was given the opportunity at today's meeting to make that point.

why not ask gang banger if he or she are here illegal
hell the police have got a new polic, not only the old dwb but the news wab (walking & black in my life i have been stopped as the bank robber in my get a way car a ford pinto yr 73!getting off the bus after work a man with a gun and noboby call from the bus it happen a cross the street from the bus stop if they can send me though all this and i was born here and raised here why not everyone

Eric, you did a great job with the interview this morning. Not sure if you being in the studio is your idea, or the big brass, but you belong in the field. Important stories like this are your thing. That, and being at LAX.
Keep up the great work.

It's about time someone said something about the illegal situation. I live in a "sanctuary city." This meanss that the police cannot ask for papers of anyone. Our crime rate is up. We see gnag violence all the time and it is usually people from Mexico. This is NOT a racist remark it is FACT. I live in Montebello. I am tired of people coming up to me ( I am light skinned, light hair, and blue eyed) assuming I speak spanish. When I tell them I don't speak spanish they give me dirty looks as if I was the one in the wrong. The last time I checked we still live in America and english is the language spoken here.
I feel for this family who has lost their son, a bright boy who had a great future. Unlike the one who so thoughtlessly shot down this boy. This murderer had a rap sheet and just got out of jail the day before. What is wrong with this picture.
I would like to know where I can sign a petition or get more information so we can get the illegal gang bangers OUT of our country!!!

I heard Villaraigosa had a hand in the police not being able to contact the ICE. Some provision #40 or something that he passed? Can you shed any more light on this? This is a complete outrage.
