TV News Anchor Drops F-Bomb
9:16 AM May 14, 2008
Note to folks who work in live television: Your microphone is always on. Keep that in mind, please.
Maybe you've seen the clip from New York anchorwoman Sue Simmons yelling a very bad word during a "tease" for the 11PM news broadcast.
I'm not going to post it myself, because I don't like putting that kind of content on my blog. But if you want to see it yourself, here's the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TVUcJaEUA0&NR=1Now she did apologize. New York tabloids are suggesting that Sue likes to imbibe adult beverages during her dinner breaks.
That's not a good enough excuse. Sorry.

Yes, Eric, I get it more than you know. It is most disheartening. Thanks.

CM:
You need to pay attention. I posted a cleaned up version of the Bill O'Reilly meltdown (without obscenties). I posted LINKS to the obscene version. With Sue Simmons, I only posted a LINK to the obscene version. The point is, on my blog, you won't see or hear obscenity. You will have to go to another webpage to see it. So there's no double standard. Get it?

Eric, the point is, you WILL post Bill O'Reilly's "meltdown" but not Sue Simmons because you don't like to post "that kind of content" on your blog. Just noting the double standard, once again.
No big deal, just wish the "news" reporters were a little more honest with themselves and with us.
Today Michaela noted that President Bush got a "cheap shot" in at Barack Obama - nevermind that the comment was actually directed at President Carter. Has Michaela, you, anyone else at a "news" enterprise pointed out the "cheap shots" taken at the president on a daily basis? Not necessary! EVERYONE ("everyone" being those in your circles, not mine, I prefer to remain "no one") knows that President Bush is worthy of every vile comment directed his way! But one phrase that MIGHT be applicable to Obama, well THAT's a cheap shot and my my my are we bent out of shape!
Riiiiiight... no aganda there...

Eric:
In an earlier blog you posted a video of Stephen Colbert, who does not normally make me laugh. But the other day I saw Colbert's parody of Bill O'Reilly's rant and I must admit it was hilarious.

Hey cm:
I don't hate Bill O'Reilly. Don't even know him. I just thought the tape showing his meltdown was entertaining, just as I thought the Sue Simmons swearing tape was interesting. There's no agenda, it's just kinda funny to watch.

"I'm not going to post it myself, because I don't like putting that kind of content on my blog."
Unless, of course, it's about Bill O'Reilly, a couple entries down, because EVERYone hates O'Reilly, right? Well, maybe everyone YOU talk to...but then, that's EVERYone! Of course, I'm guessing you never actually watch O'Reilly, but hey, what do facts have to do with it.
News flash!!! NOT everyone thinks like you! Please don't faint from the shock but I swear, it's TRUE! Your ideas are not the be-all and end-all. Hard to believe, ain't it?

Consider in this category cellphones that drift and redial people at random when the phone is in your pocket or purse.
I've overheard conversations from people who had no idea their phone was on. I've yelled into the phone trying to get their attention. When I recognize who's calling, I've called them from another phone hoping their phone will ring or buzz indicating a call going to voice mail. Does someone have a solution for this dilemma? It's very scary to think how open our lives are to the outside world when we least expect it.

Eric,
Considering how many viewers the 9AM show has lost and this being a ratings month. I'm surprised the executive producer hasn't come up the idea of having what few viewers left listen to the girls in the "Hen House" talk during a break. I bet the viewers would get an ear full. LOL

Eric
Before I respond to this subject I have a confession to make. I committed a KTLA Viewers Cardinal Sin, I watched the 9am show so I could hear this lady say the F-Bomb, that and much more importantly the bra segment.
Now down to business
With everything that's going on here on local TV in LA, being this happened in NY i'm not really surprised.
You think after the CNN Kyra Phillips Bathroom Incident (mic should have been off but wasn't) people would assume the mics are always on and would watch what they say.

I saw the video last night and I must say that as soon as Simmons said the word "fudge" (the other way of saying the word), I couldn't breathe for 30 seconds knowing that all that happened during a live broadcast television tease. I can't even believe that the censors missed the opportunity to bleep that out (or did they not expect it at all because they assumed Simmons knew she was on live and not on for a taped tease?). Although this was a huge blunder on Simmon's part, this begs the question: What's next for her? Is she gonna get fired or reprimanded for her actions? At least she apologized on air 6 minutes after it happened so that's good. Hopefully things will work out with her and WNBC after this very unfortunate incident.

Fresh out of the Navy, my first job was as a board operator/over night news reader for a very small am radio station in Mobil, Alabama. I was told at the time to consider the mic HOT, when ever I entered the studio. I was told to think that my mother/grandmother was in the studio listening to everything I said. If I did, I would never drop the *F* bomb and lose my licence to operate a transmitter. (Yes, it was that long ago, back in the day when Board OP's needed an FCC licence) It worked well enough for me. Seems this reporter forgot the lesson or worse, lever learned it.

I realize she is a well-known and liked anchor but I agree, saying something like this on-air then thinking an apologize makes it right…it doesn’t. I’m still waiting for KTLA’s apology for the OMFG. I guess some people just think they can do/say what they want because their above it all.

Saw the story at another website. The link was disabled. Totally understand why you wouldn't want to allow access from your website.
In this age of YouTube we all should be aware the microphone is always on - in our professional and private lives, e.g., Alec Baldwin. Saw him on 60 Minutes last Sunday and he's still explaining how and why a private voice mail left for his daughter went public.
