Santa Monica's GLOW Festival
10:19 AM July 20, 2008
Thousands of people showed up for this event on and around the Santa Monica Pier. Most of the art involved the use of light projected onto water, canvas, or various screens. It lasted from 7 PM to 7 AM. I liked the fact that such a big crowd spent hours walking around, talking to each other, and looking at visual art. That's something that doesn't happen in Southern California very often.

I was one of the artists who did an installation, "illumination migration". It was up and looked beautful from 8 pm to 10:30. Then the mob took over. in a matter of 15 minutes out of the 1000 glow sticks i had put out (in a rainbow of colors that was 75 ft by 125ft) 800 were stolen. I managed to save 200. I closed the project down for an hour and then put the rest out in the sand and let people make designs and patterns with them. I just had to go with the flow. By the end of the night there were no glow sticks left.

Hello everyone! I tried to submit an installation to GLOW but they asked for too many things (essays, maps, plans, 3d sketches, etc, etc.) and I gave up. Three months later, the morning of the event, went to HomeDepot and bought 4 shovels, went to Pier 1 and got 400 candles and off we went to the site and builted 105 volcanoes on the sand! No permit, no glory, no name but people enjoyed it a lot and that made me feel very good. Here are some pictures...

I went to Glow. I was ok. Too many people. The displays on the beach were cool and that is about it. Took the bus there and had to take a cab home, because the bus was not running or was diverted, I don't think Santa Monica was ready for all the traffic. Santa Monica should think before this happens again. Now where is all the revenue going to go from this art display, nothing good I bet.

It looks nice on TV but it wouldn't sway to go there. I will never go to Santa Monica if I can avoid it, because to me it's become too much a "Big Brother" city.

This event was a complete sham to inject money into the businesses in Santa Monica. They claimed that all the shops on Third Street Promenade were going to stay open late, what a bunch of BS that turned out to be. The only establishments that stayed open late were liquer shops and restaurants.
The "art" was limited and the majority of the projects consisted of looping videos from a projecter. One video projected on the side of the old Robinsons May was setup on a construction scissor lift - pathetic. TVs inside of the cannons along Ocean was poorly thought out. The water display was interesting, but noting spectacular considering I have seen much better renditions over 20 years ago.
I humped my photography equipment and I didnt even bother setting up. Countless people approached me throughout the night to ask where was the show?
You know its a corporate sham when Kohler, Starbucks, Barcardi Rum show up to push their crap. Even the GLOW information booth was pushing their worthless items.
One of the worst events I have ever been to. The people in Santa Monica that agreed to take advantage of the public in this manner should be fired.

Sounds good Flaco. Maybe I'll attend next year. Hey I just heard about the "Naked Woman" incident. I saw the interview and thought nothing about it. I don't get why people made such a big deal out of it. I'm glad you apologize (CYA) although I think the person who wanted you to ask the question was more responsible. Don't worry about it Eric we all know you were intent on making it fun as is the part of KTLA that makes it entertaining. Behind you all the way. Is the guy who egged you on behind you all the way. Oh No! Now I've got to apologize to him. And you too! Oh no, what a stupid thing for me to say. Can I get a job at KTLA??? Can I? Can I? Can I? Hey it's how one takes things, isn't it?
