Summer Reading

8:40 AM  August 4, 2008

Maxdeale Here's something that doesn't happen very often:  Two authors came up to me in a parking lot in Studio City to show me books they've written, and both of them turn out to be worth reading.

A guy named Max Deale has written a how-to guide on how to get great tickets to concerts and sporting events without having to pay scalpers and ticket brokers.

It's called "Sold Out, So What!"  Max's main piece of advice is don't believe them when they say an event is sold out.  Wait until just before it's supposed to start and you can get some great deals.  He provides detailed suggestions on how to find hard-to-get tickets, and better yet, how to turn lousy seats into great ones.

I support anyone who shows me ways to beat the greedy brokers or the corporate ticket "master", which charges ridiculous 'fees'...  (Two bucks just to print the ticket on my computer, are they nuts?)

You can find it on Amazon or at Max Deale's own site.  He's charging $15.95 for his book of secrets but he says he can save you much more than that in no time.

Alacart

Another unique offering is a book called "A la Cart" by Hillary Carlip.  This performance artist transforms herself into various characters (male and female) you might find in an L.A. supermarket.  Each one has their own shopping list

It's a truly imaginative work... You can't believe it's the same person in all the photos.

Eric:

Have you tried Max Deale's? How much did you save on tickets to what event? Ripoff prices have kept us out of a lot of "gotta see" shows. Let's not even talk about Vegas. The last time I priced a ticket to see Gladys Knight in Vegas I almost fainted - $190 each, minimum of 4 tickets per purchas. Are we in a recession or is it just my household?

Hillary's book reminds me of Tracey Ullman's specials where she plays all the characters. Hilarious. Looks like a fun summer read.
