Manny Gone for 50 Games

10:42 AM  May 7, 2009

Manny

The bomb dropped early this morning:  news that Dodger star Manny Ramirez tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.  He'll be suspended for 50 games, which will cost him more than $7 million in salary.

He indicates in a statement that it was an innocent mistake:

Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was okay to give me.

Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now.

I do want to say one other thing; I've taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons.

I want to apologize to Mr. McCourt, Mrs. McCourt, Mr. Torre, my teammates, the Dodger organization, and to the Dodger fans.

LA is a special place to me and I know everybody is disappointed. So am I. I'm sorry about this whole situation.

Hey Manny, there is one person who's probably NOT sorry about this whole situation -- the minor league outfielder just called up from Triple A to take your place on the Dodgers!

Now what happens to Mannywood?

Right, Nomad, the "juice" simply enhances natural talent, hm? Bigger, faster, stronger.

the sad thing about Manny and others like him is that juicing might not even help them play baseball any better

Or Mannydug?

-mike:

"Mannydid" HAHAHAHA.

How about Mannydud? LOL

Jozielee - I would imagine only the vendors selling the #99 t-shirts and the bandanas w/ the dreds... "Mannywood" should be renamed to "Mannydid"

Is anyone missing Manny now that he's missed a few games?

Eric,
What is forgotten here are professional sports is a business. These athletes are paid way too much to be careless. There is NO way Manny did not know what he was doing was wrong. If you can't comply with the rules then you are gone. If I owned the Dodgers Manny would be fired for damaging the entire team and their honest efforts. Manny may have cost the team in many ways. I also believe he is paid way to much money to look like he just jumped of the stage as a reggae band member, look and act professional as you are overpaid to do.

I don't really care for Manny, I think that he will eventually leave the Dodgers, but since the Dodgers are saving money that they don't have to pay Manny, why not put the money to good use and give it to charity

Is it really fair that LA take this hit? I doubt Manny was clean when he was with the Red Sox and they won two World Series? Everyone thought that was so great and that's not being put into question. Admitted, when Giants fans feel sorry for us, it does make my skin crawl. Still, if the Red Sox team got an asterick, see how Boston would react?

Hey Eric!!!
I am a die-hard baseball fan and an even bigger Dodger fan. All I have to say is that it is very disappointing. Yes, it is just a game but these men are setting an example for our children. It should be black and white, right and wrong. I will not be giving much love 49 games from now to Manny. 'Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me." I have a example to set for my son. I understand that the fans want their team to win but back in the day they just went out there smacked the ball and win or loose played the game. My motto is "For the Love of the Game." I think that we are forgetting what it's like to sit in a beautiful ballpark on a sunny summer afternoon and just enjoy.
Where have we gone wrong?

Honestly, I think there are so many athletes using illegal, performance-enhancing drugs, and Ramirez got caught. Apparently, the athletes don't feel bad enough not to dope, just sorry for being caught... I wonder how many are still out there?

We all owe a debt of gratitude to Manny Ramirez for apparently ending the Swine Flu Epidemic.
Ever since his story broke, the barrage of reporting on the Swine Flu has ceased.
It is truly a miracle!

My son was working on a an oral report last night that was about the state of Alabama (not one of my favorite states..but it was a draw of what states the kids got assigned).

Any who..we did a portion of the report on famous people from the state. Two of the worlds greatest baseball players are from Alabama...Willie Mays and Hank Aaron.

My husband and I tried to educate our 11 year old on who these athletes were..since not much talk about them anymore and why they were so good. We told our son how phenomenal these great players were and how they broke records long before athletes were taking drugs to increase their performance.

As a parent I do not like having to explain to my 11 year old why these modern day heroes of sports are using drugs. And yes let's do go there ...these athletes receiving all this money SHOULD be positive role models not drug users! I should not have to explain to my child why this is bad and why this being done today as opposed to the way ball was played when Willie Mays did it years ago.....and of course discuss the always delicate balance of why my son should never do this.

If these athletes are receiving these HUGE SALARIES they DO NOT have the right to take drugs...then offer all these lame ass excuses why they took them. Athletes like Mays was superb without enhancement drugs ...it can be done.

The authorities need to continue to crack down on these drug abusers. No I should not have to tell my child lies which I don’t ... or for that matter explain the truth of the great athletes that cheat today...and that they are really NOT that great after all.

Hey Spillmen,

Here is you quote for tommorow morning.

Looks like the Dodgers went limp late in the game......

LoL

Blake

Again, a newsstory regarding sports I would be all over in normal circumstances. As we all know, my circumstances are far from normal. I have too much on my plate yet to deal with to be commenting on the toy department of news. My life has been turned upside down. Sorry, I can't be more provacative and interesting, I just don't have it in me right now.

Dude who cares? It's baseball, it's sports. It's not like the world is going to end or something really important like that.

He really looks like it...All of them take the stuff.
They have a hard schedule and have to stay on top to make the grade.
No excuse.

..But I still love him!!

Of course he knew!

There is no reason to believe these athletes don't know what they are putting in their bodies. Of course they know. And to hear it was because of low testerone? He had female hormones injected? The doctor was fully aware of what he was giving him, as most doctors are. There was a reason so many teams stayed away from pursuing him in the off-season. In addition to his history of injuries, his attitude, but also due to this list of 100+ ball players that will soon be outed over the course of the season. First A-rod, now Manny, the list will go on and on until this era in baseball is fixed. At least now, there are rules with specific banned substances. And hey, The McCourts will be saving about $8mil in salary and then will get him back mid-season for the playoffs.

Mannywood lost some of its sparkle today, but no one should be surprised, can't blame a guy for trying to be the best and hey everyone was doing it...

-m

KTLA Manny Medrano said Rodriguez isn't challenging the suspension so that might mean Rodriguez knew the substance was illegal. And I noticed Rodriguez isn't saying why the doctor prescribed the drug. Makes me wonder if he has an illness or pain that might jeopardize his current $45million/2-yr contract. Better to be quiet and let people speculate. Time will tell.

to be honest don't like the guy, don't like the Dodgers so who cares!!
And yes I am an ANGELS die hard fan that even on budget me and my family are able to go see them as often as possible.

Sorry new format snafu. try this again. This is a repost of last post down all paragraphs all jumbled up. :0

I was responding to Jozie on the other So-CAL fans page but since we were talking about Manny anyway... I thought I would finish the thought here!

Jozie, Do you really believe Manny is taking prescription drugs and his doctor is not aware of the makeup of the drugs he’s prescribing?

That’s frankly hard for me to buy. If that was the case ...the doctor is either an idiot not to know if a known forbidden drug in his league is in anyway mixed into the drugs he prescribes to the very person that should not take that particular drug? You believe that was a mistake? Or the intention to camouflage this drug? We will see when it is proven one way or the other... I’m sure. But the likelihood of him taking a drug that is well known to be not acceptable... to have taken it as a mistake? Come on.
