Arnold Knife Video: Bad Taste?
8:45 AM July 23, 2009
Our Governor put out this video to his Twitter followers, thanking them for their ideas on solving the state's budget crisis.
But some folks don't think the idea of him wielding a knife is so funny, especially when we're talking about cuts that put people out of work.
Here's Arnold's response:
"You know, you sent a governor to Sacramento -- not El Stiffo, like some of the past were, but you sent someone that is a little bit more entertaining and has a little bit more fun with the whole thing," Schwarzenegger said.
"Not that I have fun with making the cuts; they sadden me. But fun with the job itself, because I think it is the most rewarding job that I've ever done, even though with a huge responsibility.
"So just relax and have a little bit of a sense of humor."
Agree or disagree? Was it in bad taste or just an innocent bit of humor?

Who was aware that this starts tomorrow?....
National Level Exercise 2009 (NLE 09)
National Level Exercise 2009 (NLE 09) is scheduled for July 27 through July 31, 2009. NLE 09 will be the first major exercise conducted by the United States government that will focus exclusively on terrorism prevention and protection, as opposed to incident response and recovery.

Why oh why did I vote for this Bully. It certainly doesn't work in Government. Part of it was my respect an admiration for his wife, Marie Shriver.Well I feel this is one realty show that the marriage won't make it also.
Very Disappointed in Arnold and Marie

Jared,
There is no question that Los Angeles City workers are among the highest paid in the country, as well as our elected officials from the mayor on down. Most of the high wages with city workers has to do with union contracts and overtime. As for elected officials, they can all do with a major pay cut considering the perks that come with the job. This is from the LA Weekly:
With the highest city council salaries in the nation, at $178,789 per year, Los Angeles City Council is possibly the highest-paid elected city body on the planet. Its pay far outstrips that of councils in costlier New York City, whose members earn a mere $112,500, and San Francisco, whose members earn $95,868. Los Angeles council members earn about 70 percent more than the piddling pay of the Chicago City Council, at $110,556.
On March 3, seven L.A. City Council members are up for re-election. Each will be easily re-elected in a primary election few Angelenos know is taking place. The rest will be recrowned in 2011, barring some natural disaster that focuses blame on City Hall. The one seat truly up for grabs March 3 is the tony Fifth Council District, being vacated by Jack Weiss, who is running for city attorney in a wide-open race (See separate story, “They Just Don’t Like Jack Weiss,” by Christine Pelisek, in News).
The L.A. City Council salaries are not just overinflated in an era of belt-tightening. They are only a hair below the salaries of Congress, and are higher than those of federal judges. They amount to a staggering 400 percent of Los Angeles’ median household income of $46,000 — and no other city council, in cities poor or rich, comes even close to that troubling disparity between public servant and the public. (Garcetti, Greuel, Janice Hahn and Weiss are paid $171,648, having refused a $7,100 raise in 2007.)
This is where cuts need to be made, not in programs that help the public.

Talk about "what to do about nothing", I fully expected a scene from Conan with Arnold in full costume slashing the evil CA budget. Unstead it's a short spot about an inventive way to make more cash for the state. Nothing to see here folks, move along.

Saw the video without sound the first time and thought it seemed odd and inappropriate. Now that I've seen it again with sound and his explanation, heck, he's an actor. He used what he knows gets attention. Why not a knife, a bomb, a straight-jacket. LOL. It's all in fun. And he did what he hoped to do . . . get our attention. You go, Govenator!

Is it any different then Cal Worthington?..
Before you put the blame on just those in Sac. and Arnold on where all of the tax money is going. Perhaps we should look in our own backyards and the backyards of the cities and counties accross the state..

The interesting thing about working with writing laws you can write you own pay and pensions programs and also for your buddies....

Eric:
When I first viewed this video, I thought it was in very poor taste.
Yes, Mike, this Governor does not take a salary. However, his staff is very, very well paid. In fact, they earn more than some of the staff, with equal responsibilites, in the White House earn. Plus the California taxpayers pay for his flights back and forth to Sacramento and his home here in Southern California each week.
I do, however, agree with the Governor that there is still a lot of wasteful spending in Sacramento -- starting with the Govenor's budget!

this is just more disgusting activity from a governor who has taken no responsibility for his actions whatsoever. he kicks back and acts disinterested in the budget during a NYT profile, sits on the sidelines while Assembly Republicans hold the state hostage with their blanket refusal to consider any revenue enhancements, and basically twiddles his thumbs for weeks until finally holding a "we-have-a-deal" press conference to paint himself as the great bridge-builder. how is that leadership?

I think people should lighten up! The governor is trying to play through the pain. He really doesn’t have that much control over where the money goes. That’s the legislature and our propositions. He can only choose not to sign a bad budget. The Governor didn't cut your sisters disability check. He hasn’t got direct control over that. He didn't fire any teachers. The Unions, School Boards, etc. are protecting their fiefdoms. Middle management abounds. They cut teachers, cut disability, and release prisoners early to cause outrage so people will accept higher taxes. We need to audit the auditors and bring the waste under control (I’m shaking my fist now).

Eric - Welcome back!
Badtaste? It's like anything else, if someone is liked they can be funny, if not, they will be scrutinized. Last night did the president make light of an important issue, since he "already has the best Health Care in the world"? Was he making a valid point about this issue not effecting him and he is truly trying to help, OR did he joke about not needing health care that many who are uninsured do not find funny?
Same goes with Arnold and the knife. Even the President made references to using a knife to slash the budget where needed. The only difference is that the Governor used a prop...
It does not change the fact that cuts were and still are needed.
By the way angeles wrote:
"I think he would start cutting his payment himself, is not still enough whit what he has?"
Currently, the Governor does not take a salary for being Governor. Clearly, he does not need the money from this position:

I think he would start cutting his payment himself, is not still enough whit what he has? If all the people around the Governor do the same, he did not cut the budget for keep all the teachers and not close some schools. Isn't funy what he did say in these video. He isn't thinking in all the people in California, he is thinking just in himself.

This video was completely unprofessional and inappropriate, but if he'd slit his own throat with the knife it would have been his proudest moment.
