MJ Coverage: Will it Ever End?

11:49 AM  July 3, 2009

Here we are in the worst economic recession in the last 70 or so years, and all you hear about on the news is... Michael Jackson?

It was enough five days ago, and yet it continues.   Here are my observations:

*The traditional news media is like a freight train that is hard to stop once it gets going at a certain speed.  Everybody jumps on board a story and keeps going until the next big thing.  Often, news managers don't think about the big picture.  What really matters in people's lives?  What's really important?  Those are questions that don't get asked as often as they should.

*It's especially bad timing for us to be so distracted.  Up in Sacramento, the government is issuing IOU's.  Lawmakers can't or won't agree on cuts to make up the budget deficit.  That story should be getting a lot more play, but it's been pushed out because of Jackson coverage.  If the lawmakers and the Governor know that all we're talking about is MJ stuff, are they going to feel any pressure to solve the problem?

*Most of the coverage steps too lightly on the negative aspects of Jackson's life.  I guess this is because it's not considered polite to bring up the dirty laundry after someone has died.  I understand this tendency, but I don't think the public is getting a balanced look at the man.

What do you think of the media coverage?  And more importantly, how do you think it could be improved?

Really interesting interview with MJ's dermatologist, Arnie Klein, with Larry King. Klein wasn't responding under oath or attached to a lie-detector, but I was most interested in his concerns about the children remaining with the Jackson family. MJ had been so protective of his children. Suddenly their image is everywhere. Will they, too, be thrust into show business? Is that Papa Joe's plan for starting a new production company starring Michael Jackson's children. Klein is encouraging Debbie Rowe, his former nursing assistant, to get involved in the children's lives to ensure they are not exploited. Things are gonna get very interesting.

I CERTAINLY HOPE THE TAXPAYERS REMEMBER THIS AT ELECTION TIME, AND REMOVE ALL THE CLOWNS THAT HAVE APPROVED SPENDING ALL THIS TIME AND MONEY ON A FUNERAL THAT SHOULD BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF HIS FAMILY, JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE US ARE EXPECTED TO DO FOR OUR FAMILY MEMBERS, CLOSING FREEWAYS AT THE BUSIEST TIME OF DAY, IGNORING THE FACT THAT OUR ECONOMY IS IN SO MUCH TROUBLE. THE MEDIA NEEDS TO WAKE UP TO THE FACT THAT WE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HEAR OTHER NEWS WHICH RELATES TO ALL OF US, NOT EVERYONE CARES ABOUT M.J., EVERYONE SEEMS TO FORGET, HE BROUGHT HIS WAY OUT OF THE CHILD MOLESTATION CHARGES, HE DIED FROM A DRUG OVERDOSE, HIS WHOLE LIFE HAS BEEN A SPECTACLE AND IN MANY CASES WIERD, NOT ENTERTAINING. NOBODY SEEMS TO TAKE NOTE OF THE FACT THAT WHEN WE HAVE MILITARY DEATHS, THOSE NAMES AND PEOPLE ARE PASSED OVER WITH A SIMPLE THREE DIED IN IRAQ, FOUR DIED IN IRAQ, NO MENTION OF THEIR NAMES, FAMILY OR THE FACT THAT THEY DIED FOR ALL OF US AND FOR VERY LITTLE PAY OR ADMIRATION. HOW ABOUT IF THE MEDIA STARTS REPORTING NEWS, THE NEWS ABOUT M.J. WAS ENDED WITH THE FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT OF HIS DEATH, SINCE THAT TIME IT HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT REHASHING HIS LIFE AND MUSIC, IF THAT IS WHAT HIS FANS WANT, LET THEM BUY A CD OR DVD AND THEY CAN WATCH IT ALL DAY AT HOME. THE REST OF US DON'T CARE. AS FAR AS THE JACKSON FAMILY, HIS RECORD PRODUCERS AND ANYONE ELSE INVOLVED IN HIS LIFE, IT APPEARS THAT THEY ARE MORE INTENT ON MAKING MORE OUT OF HIS DEATH THAN NECESSARY, MOSTLY BECAUSE IT MEANS MORE MONEY FOR THEM IN THE LONG RUN, SO WHY ARE THE TAXPAYERS PUTTING UP MILLIONS FOR THIS. I THINK IT HAS GOTTEN PEOPLE TO THE POINT OF OPENING THE WINDOWS AND SCREAMING " I AM FED UP AND I AM NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE"

For Michael Jackson. Rest in peace . . .

I think that entertainment stories should be limited to the entertainment section and the rest of the NEWScast should be dedicated to events that truly have lasting impact. I can understand the first couple of days after his death but now it's just craziness. If I want to hear about celebrities, I can tune in to an entertainment show. It's so hard to find an actual NEWScast anymore.

I love you, My-co.

Seriously, the throng of people who've come out to show their love for MJ is heartwarming. 24/7 coverage will end once he's buried. I'm patient. I can see him through. For me, it wasn't too much coverage because I want to know how other people are mourning. I feel their pain. And the coverage pays homage to his family, letting them know we, the people of the world, share their loss.

In time, the news will turn negative. It's already beginning. But until then I plan to enjoy the music, the love, the joy. Together let's enjoy the beauty Micheal Jackson left behind.

You know, I remember when people thought Martin Luther King Jr was just a southern preacher who caused trouble by leading marches. Over the years we've learned more about his legacy and we even celebrate with a holiday . . . . and many of us remember how the thought of a holiday for MLK was poopooed. I'm not equating MJ with MLK, but to ignore MJ's contributions to beauty and culture of the world is to walk around wearing blinders.

I love you, My-co. And while I won't be at the Staple Center memorial, I'll be sitting in front of my television set, handkerchief in hand, singing along and boohooing my eyes out. May you be sleeping in heavenly peace . . .

I want to truly thank you ktla for the coverage on MJ. I truly believe he deserves much more. Have we forgotten what MJ has done, no matter what the negative comments torge MJ are, look at all the positive things he has done, look at how many people he has help, the ill, the disabled, he loved everyone, no matter what nationality you were. I would truly miss my icon, he paved the way for me and many others. God Bless the Jacksons and us fans at this time, the world is in mourning. He lives on in me and many others. Thank You so much KTLA, Keep up the good work, You guys are doing a great job. Love You All.

MJ coverage is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much. What about Farrah Fawcett or the other famous people that have died over the past few weeks? What about the important information concerning our state government and Iraq? I mean California is issuing IOUs, will they ever pay them? Who is going to get a job now? The MJ story should have been put to rest a long time ago; the public's obsession with MJ's death is only so because of the media's extreme coverage...its not like, heaven forbid, our president died. That I can understand. How can it be improved? By stopping such extreme coverage and focusing on the important stuff that people need to know about. Period.

It is a personal tradgedy for the family, his close friends, and the music industry but I believe it has gone too far and I feel that he and his family are being exploited in their time of grief.

It is turning out to be more of a circus then a time of mourning and remebering.

When there is actual confirmation of issues then it is time to talk about it..........but get on with the news and life.

THANK YOU ERIC SPILLMAN. Let's cover the important stuff that the country needs to be informed on. Your message today on the news was A BREATH OF FRESH AIR. SOMEONE NEEDED TO SAY IT!! ENOUGH ALREADY!!! I AM SICK OF MICHAEL JACKSON NEWS AND ANYTHING RELATED TO HIM.

The country should not forget about everything just because Michael Jackson died, it needs to keep working on what it should be working on.

The media should press on state issues, so that the pressure is back on lawmakers. It's like politician's are getting a break or a time extension with this Michael Jackson thing.

I like to be updated with MJ coverage, but like you said there are thinks more important for every one. There is another thing that I want to say. Why not- starting with the governor- stop receiving their big fat checks meanwhile the recesion is over? Why not the governor took better decisions about leaving a lot of people without theis jobs. Why not some one think in - like many companies does- that give to all the people a part time job instead of some get the full time an others nothing? I know is hard for every one in this time of crisis, but is hardest for the ones that lost their job.

Eric..

You posting another blog about MJ keeps it in the news...

As long as you are going to keep asking question on this it will keep going...

Put it to rest...

I agree, the MJ coverage is way too much. As it has been pointed out here, there is more going on than MJ's death. By Tuesday, like the man, this story should be put to rest. The Californian budget deficit should be at the top of all news managers to do list. The media needs to get the news out so the lawmakers know the taxpayers of this state are watching them and expect them to do the job they were voted to do. As for the negative aspects of Jackson's life. He was a public figure, those aspects will come out down the line as they have with others. That dirty laundry will get aired, it's just a matter of time.
