New "Avatar" movie & James Cameron will go to the Oscars as nominees
3:15 PM December 10, 2009
London --- Just left the 'World Premiere' of "Avatar," and while the standing ovation the film received at its conclusion is probably just the requisite politeness; I can report that this is another rare example where the quality of the movie does indeed exceed the hype and "Avatar" will most certainly be among the 10 'Best Picture' nominees for the Oscars; and James Cameron will also be a Best Director nominee. I think it is also possible that actress Zoe Saldana, who has the most challenging of roles in the film, may rack up an additional acting nomination as well.
The movie may owe more than a few plot points to the story of Pocahontas, and there may be some grousing at a fairly heavy-handed treatment of corporate greed and our lack of American energy independence; but the key question, is Cameron able to deliver a movie that packs the entertainment value and emotional punch of 'Titanic.' The clear answer is 'Yes.' The Oscars will not ignore this film.

I saw Avatar this weekend. I want my money back. Granted teh movie is visually stunning, and, in 3D a technological master piece, but the story was way to thin, and not thought out. They never discussed WHY Unobtanium (not even well thought out name) was necessary, or why we needed to go off-planet to find it. We didn't find out the Earth was dying until the end. The movie was plainly an anti-Corporate America, Aniti-Military, anti-Military-Industrial Complex movie, showcasing how bad Technology is, while using technology to sell the idea. I especially disliked the "In Your Face" political message.
I wonder if the theater outlets gave back money to unsatisfied moview goers, how well the box office receipts would be for this and other movies.

Frosty,
I have to agree with you. Being part of the Baby Boomer generation myself. We have done more that any generation that has come after us. We have a better work ethic, our films and music are original. I worry about our future in the hands of these lesser generations who feel they are so very privilege.

To K.
Since most of films that come out of Hollywood are made by people under forty, and most of them seem to be nothing more than bad remakes of old TV shows. Just what generation are you talking about? The one made up of twenty something's who think the world owns it a living because they are so special? That have NOTHING to offer since they have no life experiences other than mommy and daddy giving them everything and being self-centered. Yep, can't wait for those films to come out. Remember baby boomers have made it possible for you to live the life you have.

Special effects: new and exciting.
Plot and message. So 1969.
This is like classic "Wizard of Oz" made in 1938 being re-written into an anti-Spanish American war propaganda film. When will the friggen Vietnam centered baby boomers die off and let someone with a fresh vision take the reins?

I'm just making sure I keep my English and my spelling up to the standards of Arkhog (Then, and only then, you may return to this forum) - I have to say in this world of using the wrong words it's good to see that someone (elio) has used the word paranoic in its correct context as opposed to paranoid; it depends on the tenses as to when you use either paranoia, paranoiac or paranoid and also what kind of education you've had.
We could criticise Arkhog for his use of commas and his splitting of the infinitive but this is supposed to be about Avator.
I haven't seen Avator yet but I've seen the trailer which I didn't like; nothing to go by, I know, but I do remember the wonderful success of The Deer Hunter and then the terrible failure of Heaven's Gate; I hope it doesn't happen this time.

Just came home from seeing "The Blind Side." Absolutely great flick!!!
While there, I saw previews to Avatar. This movie is going to be a lot of fun to watch. With the demise of Western Union, I am wondering if enough people desiring a "message" will shell out the required greenbacks to cover Avatar's $400 million expenses.
Can't wait.

Excuse me but WHY wasn't Ernest Borgnine cast in the lead role?

It amazes me that our loser political leaders of all countries have reduced the people of their prospective countries to a mindless mosh-pit of idiocracy. Ignore the politicians, people, make up your own minds!

Love how people project their own beliefs into all they observe. What a bunch of clueless idiots. The plot is a standard plot - plot: more advanced civilization exploits less advances civilization; subplot: romance between members of opposing groups.. Any of you monkeys familiar with any literature or history!
Did you hate "District 9" because it ridiculed government beauracracy in South Africa? Did you hate "Black Robe" because it showed native Americans (Indians for some of you) to be vicious predators? Did you hate "Brave Heart" for it's anti-gay sentiment? Was "Lord of the Rings" racist because the Orcs were creatures of color?
Sell your computer - Get out of the House - Get a life
ACK!!!

Gore Vidal is one angry old man, but this quote is spot on!

"As societies grow decadent, the language grows decadent, too. Words are used to disguise, not to illuminate, action: You liberate a city by destroying it. Words are used to confuse, so that at election time people will solemnly vote against their own interests."

Man, I thought I was going to read comments about the movie, "Avatar", then suddenly everything turned to shyt, and yet another mind-numbing political discussion/bashing breaks out. Give it a rest!

Didn't you pretty much say the same thing about the Miley Cyrus movie and the MJ movie?
I'm sick of your "oscar" predictions.

Of course Avatar is "Oscar Bound"; it fulfills all the requirements: 1) America bashing. 2) Bashing of the military. 3) Corporations are evil. 4) The natives are noble, peaceful and don't emit greenhouse gases, I guess. 5) There's probably a gay sub-plot to seal the deal.

it's a fantastic and creative looking movie ... the acting (probably) and storyline (definitely) both belong in a trash bin, but you can't argue with advancements in cgi. as for you extremist leftists and righties, you don't understand. you keep fantasizing that life is, should or shouldn't be like the "ideals" promoted in these films, but war has been and always will be ... especially for resources and the growth of economies, unless humanity changes and that won't be soon. so stop handing over your self-determination to a few elitists in power, stop listening to state-run media groups in europe, asia and s. america and start living your lives.
